Hard Start only when engine is warm

99. Car starts fine except when it's been recently driven, and I try to start it 20-30 minutes after it's been shut down. It sputters and unless I rev it up, it will shut off. I have to hold the revs up for a minute or so, then it idles fine again and drives fine. It only happens if the car has been sitting after driving for a 20--40mins window of time. Once it's cooled down it starts up fine again. Thoughts??

Search for hot start issues on this forum.
Fuel pressure regulator I believe is the culprit. Had the same issue on my '00 with winter blend fuel.

i live in SoFlo too and had a similar issue for over a year. Found on this forum that the issue was vapor canister purge valve.

the guide for replacement says you need to replace canister as well due to corrosion of screws but i was able to change just the valve without the canister and it fixed my problem.

i changed plugs, coils, egr (also cleaned egr ports), throttle position sensor etc....before i was able to pin point it to that. the parts is like $50 and by the gas tank by the rear of car.

YOu had same symptoms as mine huh? Wonder what that valve does. I do have a lot of buildup of crud under gas lid, I replaced gas cap about 6 months ago because I thought that was causing the buildup. Did you have any of that?

^ I agree, when the purge valve is defective it can cause the car to run rich by allowing additional gas vapors to flood the engine causing your hard to start problems on a hot to warm engine after a short stop.

By the time the engine gets cold the gas vapors have had enough time to dissipate and that is why the car starts normal again every single time when the engine is cold or cool.

Is there anyway for me to test this before I spend the time and $ to change it?

Yes there is but it's more trouble than it's worth.

The part that goes bad on the canister is called a canister vent shut valve. It is connected to the canister with two screws that are extremely difficult to get off. Typically the canister is replaced as well since the two screws will not come off from rust or rounding the heads off.

If this vent shut valve goes bad it usually trips a P1457 code.

When I replaced mine it fixed this problem. Best place to get them is on Amazon.
