Grinding Noise on cold startup

Grinding Noise on cold startup

I've been getting this high pitched grinding noise around the belt area. Not sure which belt is making the noise but it seems like its coming from where the alternator is. Seems like it goes away after the car warms up, and is louder when it is cold outside in the morning. Its kinda loud when i open the hood when the car is cold. Its hard to with the hood closed.

Is this the belt tensionor recall problem? Mine is a 2000TL. What's goin on here?

if you take it to the dealer, you'll definitely have to leave it over night so they can start it in the morning and hear for themselves. Is it only when it's cold outside or just when the engine is cold?

Its most noticeable when the engine is cold and its cold outside.

Its more of a loud sqeeking noise, rather than a grinding noise. Has anyone experienced this??

I think I know what noise your talking about. Is it when you first start up and it's for about 2-3 seconds? If so, that's your timing belt. How many miles do you have on your car? My 1988 Honda Accord had that noise right before the timing belt went at 120k.

car has 60k miles. It dosn't go away after 2-3 seconds. It stays for like 4-5 minutes.

oh, hmmm...I'm not sure then. I'd say take it to the dealer and have them give you a loaner for the night so they can check it out the next day.

Well, my car is out of warranty so do i still get a loaner? And I don't really want to just drop it off to the stealer and be stuck with a big bill..

Just wondering if anyone had an idea of what it could be. And maybe a possible DIY..

Could be your serpentine belt? Try spaying some WD-40 on your belt, if the noise immediately stops - get a new belt. If there is no change, it could be a tensioner or even an alternator bearings...

Hey on cold days, when I shift from R > D5..it almost seems like its forcing itself into gear (Grinding noise)..anyone?
