radar detector doesn't mean you're 100% cop proof...it just gives you BETTER chances of avoiding a ticket. you still need to drive smart...

Describe the circumstances where you got a ticket, e.g., where was the cop, traffic conditions, etc.

A few things.

First, a detector is meant to do exactly that. DETECT and assist you in avoidance. It does not mean you hook it up and instantly become invisible and untouchable.

Second, the instant you detect laser, you're already being clocked and it's over. Laser is precise and instantaneous. Since laser is just light, it is not governed by the FCC like radar...therefore, it's not a federal crime to scramble it.

Third, slow down hot shot.

Your detector is probably fine. Laser doesn't always get picked up. Like everyone said, a Radar/Laser Detector doesn't make you invisible to COPS. If you were the intented target and a COP does clock you a 8500 x50 or a V1 won't protect you.

My brother in law is a state trooper and I have been out riding with him many times while on duty. We have run laser on the highway and there is no "detector" on the planet that will detect "Instant On" laser sets in time for you to slow down... Once the laser handset is calibrated, it's as easy as aim and pull the trigger. The detector may go off, but it's already to late. Most of the newer laser sets do not send out any signal/laser until the tigger is pulled, then it takes less than a second for them to get your exact speed. It's actually amazing how it works.

Best bet is to keep it under 75 and they won't bother you unless they are really bored... Favorite spots are long distance corners, hills, and on-ramps. If you are traveling uphill, slow down before you go over the top. If you are left laning it on a corner keep another vehicle at your 45degree angle (between you and inside of corner) in the center lane. If you're approacing an off-ramp, remember there is an on-ramp just up ahead... the wolf may be waiting.

Little common sense helps keep you out of ticket trouble.

Good Luck.

Your detector is working just fine, like the others said. Having one doenst mean you wont get a ticket. You need to use your eyes and constantly be looking for the cops. The 8500 and V1 are the 2 best units out there

The lower you mount it teh better it will be at detecting laser, the higher the better for radar. If your being taged by laser you better hope that your are far enough away that it hasnt picked you up yet. Laser has a shorter range than radar, So if you have any advantage with it its that you can ssee the cop beforehand and SLOW DOWN. To help minimize the distance they can get you Put on a black bra and remove your front plate. It will make it harder for them to get you, and give you some warning time to slow down.

Think about it....a detector......how can it help you? It detects>if he had shot it at somebody else before you got there....you would have known something was up in that area? Information is the asset......as others have said...you still have to use your head.

BTW...feel you pain....just paid a ticket on friday....thats when I got my detector! I looked at them as a nuisance before then and just used eyesight.

Keep mine on auto. I just got back from St. Louis (1300 miles round trip), my Passport 8500 X50 Blue saved my ass just inside the Michigan/Indiana border. Punk in turbo Eclipse wanted to run, made like I was, and the kid took off. About 1/2 mile down, detector goes off once very strong, then a secondtime as I go by the cop in the median. About 15 seconds later, the cop flies by about 100 mph, and pulls the Eclipse over (he was getting further away from me, and I was doing 70 past the cop).

Then coming home, just happened to see the cop hiding in the median, turned off cruise and was hit with Laser. No warning! No ticket!

The laser detecting function is useless. Once they pull the laser trigger, you are caught instantly. No time to hit the brakes.

I got hit with a laser once. The officer was on a overpass bridge, shot down on me when i pass the bridge. My laser detection went off and that was it(ticket). 85 on a 70 highway.

Sooooo... I'm assuming you folks never heard of the Escort ZR3 Laser Shifter?

Our store sells them. I've installed them. I've run them against a laser SMD. It works. I'm not claiming that in will prevent you from getting a ticket. But this product works. And it's completely legal. Radar jammers are illegal because radar is regulated by the FCC. Laser is regulated by the FDA.

Buy an ESCORT ZR3 Shifter.

Oh weird, I was just about to say the exact same thing! Hook the ZR3 to your x50 and you're much better off, plus right now your dark tint hinders your radar detector ALOT. You want the best protection possible buy the ZR3 and pair it with the ZR7, the internal radar dectector. They mount outside of the vehicle so your window tint wouldnt affect them, and the hardware is all hidden so no annoying wires to get in the way and what not.

LOL, we have a racist moderator ?

I don't know NYCdesi personally, but I can tell you:

1. Indian/South Asian (aka Brown), not likely from a big city
2. the Brits, Canada, generally Indians from big cities, all speak and write better English than Americans do , even the Canadians (that would be us lol).

Oh and abt radar/lidar(laser) detectors, don't they pickup even stray or within sight laser ?

Your Tints from what I hear affect the detector's sensitivity. I can't say for certain but I have read it somewhere.

Like everyone else, I keep mine on Auto mode.

Getting hit with Laser is an instant ticket. Even if your detector caught it. The laser beam they use only diffuses about 4 ft from a distance of 1000ft. So they are hard to detect. Most cops will clock you about 1000ft away. That is what they are suppose to do and it give them an accurate reading.

Always keep your eyes open for COPS. There is no substitute for your alert eyes. Plus, a lot of cops in my area don't use Radar or Laser if they are rolling on the freeway. They only use it in Instant On mode which means.

Personally I keep it under 75mph and I have had COPS roll right pass me for as long as I am not weaving through traffic or tail-gating. If you drive like a jack-ass you are more likely to get pulled over. Blend in with the traffic and keep from speeding too much and you can get away with some excess speed.

In Cali it is illegal to use the Escort ZR3 Laser Shifter. There is some law on the books that make it illegal to interfer with police equipment. In most other state they are perfectly legal but pricey.

That doesn't make it useless. If they are NOT shooting at you, the detector will go off and you slow down. That's the whole point of radar/laser detectors. DETECT that radar/laser is being used and warn you.

Radar and laser detectors aren't substitutes for using your eyes.

Honestly, just use your common sense. I always keep a faster car in front of me that way it'll set off any cops, and I can see them slam on their brakes. Ditto goes for cars coming up in my rearview.

Otherwise, I just memorize the headlight and taillight patterns of typical cop cars like crown vics. Yeah, it makes me feel stupid when I slow down for taxis in my rearview, but seeing cops cruise past me, trolling for speeders, makes it all worth it.

As for cops sitting around, just know where they are at places you usually drive. Here in SF driving between SF and San Jose, there are these two parallel highways, and one of them (101) always has 10X as many cops cuz there's more traffic so I just slow down more of avoid that highway.

Here we go

Radar jammers are illegal on the federal level since you're doing an unauthorized broadcast in a restricted spectrum. On the flip side, it's easy to avoid radar.

Laser scramblers are perfectly legal, barring local laws, because they're just light. A scrambler will send out a wide beam of garbage light to overload the device. That is a good investment if you plan to be an outlaw because of its instant reaction time.

Actually what I'd really want is a cell phone jammer... stupid people on their cell phones. It'd be so sweet to be able to jam them in the car in front of you with the flip of a switch.... I've seen em sold in Asian, but too bad they're illegal by the same FCC rules.

oops off topic, but thought I'd vent.

unit itself retails for 350 i believe, + install costs which will be around 200 or so i would think. pair it with the sr7 and you're at about 1000 retail, before install, so about 1500 out the door, and their both hardwire/stealth kits, so no wires hanging or anything. much nicer

Unit plus intstall would run about $500. It can be hooked directly to your 8500 x50. Good investment if you plan on speeding, where the police are running laser.
