Gas Mileage question

Just put in a can of BG 44K this time and fill it up. Fuel light just came on the other day. And I get 280 miles for 14 gallon that average just about 20 mpg. This is 50/50(city/highway), doesn't sound like good mileage.

I still have original spark plugs(52K miles) in it. Just put in a K&N air filter.

Do you think that good mileage? I mean city is suppose to be 19mpg and 29mpg for highway...so I should average around 23-24mpg.

What are the mileage that you guys usually get?

mine has about 84k miles on it with original plugs and im only gettin about 17mpg.. im sure some of it has to do with the plugs, but the other part is the whorable base gas. i can fill up off base but its about 100$ to fill up here (united kingdom = about 8$ a gallon), unless i get the gas coupons (makes local gas same price as base gas ~3.30 a gallon) which i think im going to do more often.. i get about 22mpg with off base gas.

Thats about normal. Plus if you live in a colder climate or where they have switched to winter formulas that would also explain lower numbers. Mileage really depends on driver, weather, traffic.

Before some recent transmission problems, I pretty much always averaged 24 - 27 mpg for 50/50 city/hwy driving. On long highway trips, I would get 30-31. Replacing the stock Michelins with Yokos reduced my mileage by about 2-3 mpg. Recent tranny problems (I hope) reduced it another 8 mpg for the last few fill-ups. I'll find out when I get my car back with the new transmission next week if the mileage is back to normal or if something else is fooked up.

I have a tad less than 79K miles, so I may try changing my plugs. Air filters were changed around 5K miles ago. I ran 2 bottles of cleaner through the tank (I forget the brand, but it was recommended on the board and not BG44K).

I never really noticed much of a difference in winter fuel mixes vs non-winter fuel mixes. I figured any difference was offset by me not running my A/C in cold weather.

Make sure you are using Tier 1 type gasoline, example: chevron texaco shell
Its made different than joecheapos gas and the TL book says to use it. 91 or higher!

When using BG or Seafoam to clean thru the gas, read directions carefully and use at MAX doseage! You can use 2 oz seafoam per 1 gal gas, or 1 can in 1/4 tank for best results.
Seafoam goes into the intake vac line too- super cleans valves and piston tops, read the thread- seafoamed the ol TL - for details
NGK Iridium IX spark plugs help any TL over 50-60k miles
Check the cabin air filter behind the glovebox- replace every year just like brake fluid

i got 106k miles on the car : Cold winter, high altitude Colorado)
best i got for avarage was 27mpg (was mostly CIty but drove VERY smooth)
High way i get 31mpg if i do just 70mph and smooth.

i just found out my tire pressure was low as 25psi and one tire was 15psi.
so i assume if all where at 32psi i would get better high way mpg.

if i just drive normal i get 25mpg avarage.

I drove with it from Colorado to Oregon and TOWING a trailer with a motorcycle .
high speeds most of the time at 80mph and more some times. i got 22mpg to there.
and 27mpg on the way back.

i think it's all come down to ,

1) Driving habits (Smooth = better mpg)
2) maintenance
3) tires

You can run way more than 32 psi on OE tires.
36 front 34 rear helps mileage and handling

smooth= good~

Tire pressure and wear depend on many things. The numbers I gave will not hurt your car in any way. The front of the car weighs more than the back and handles turning and braking.
The extra 2 psi helps that, and a slight f/r diff is good in most FWD cars for reducing the understeer, or cars desire to go straight into the wall when you want to turn

run them at 15 and see how long they last!!

yes i know that very low pressure will wear them fast. that wasn't intentional for sure.

most of you have very low numbers for milage compared to mine. I was getting about 23mpg with mostly back road driving running 93octane fuel, recently i switched to 89 octane and picked up 3mpg. my car has 190k and as far as i know just had the plugs changed for the first time.

I put in premium gas( Exxon 93 ) and those of you who get under 20mpg, is that 50city/50highway?

I would be happy with 20mpg if it's all city mileage but 50/50, I expected a little more.

lower octane didnt boost the mileage, new spark plugs did!!
Anyone with over 60-70k miles would benifit from new NGKs

It takes a lot of energy to get 3500 lbs rolling every block or two at a light, even worse in stop and go traffic. So mixed is a relative term

If you really want better mileage, somethings I do are throw my car into neutral when I'm rolling to a stop (or downhill anywhere if you're desperate), new plugs=better burn=more power per stroke=less rpms, I dont totally understand the manual auto shift on the TL yet, but shifting at lower rpms will make a huge difference, if you shift at 2k rpms instead of 2500 rpms, you're taking 500 rpms off which is like cutting off 1/5 more fuel consumption to each stroke. This is just wat I do cuz I drive a 5.7l V8 on a 30 to 50 mile daily haha.

The sport shift- well the name should imply that economy is not its intended use!

Use D5 and and easy foot- let the computer handle the rest, unless you're smarter than the car?
Use SS and forget to put it in 5th on the freeway- there goes your mileage
