Question gas mileage and breakin oil

Did anyone notice a difference in MPG after you changed oil for the first time? I have about 4K miles on my 01TL and have been getting about 23mpg with pretty gentle driving. I am hoping that part of this poor mileage is a symptom of the OEM breakin oil. My plan is to change out the original oil at 4500 miles. Any comments?

I've been getting anywhere between 23-26 mpg on my 2k with 9,000 miles. I drive pretty gently and have only started using the A/C a little more than usual, but have noticed about a 3 mpg difference with A/C. It will definitely help your mileage if you can life without it. As far as the oil changes go (I've had 2 so far), didn't notice any difference in mileage. FWIW

23 mpg and you are complaining.

since i bought the car back on 3/24/2000. The avg i am getting is around 16-18, never for once it goes above 20.

On the other hand, my heavier and hard driven 530i consistently delivers 20 mpg.

Question

Hmm. What is the average MPG for a TL-S? The sticker indicates 19 to 29. I only have two tanks for data comparison, with tank #1 yielding 21 MPG and tank #2 25 MPG. Both had 50% a/c usage with a slightly heavier than normal foot. I was, however, manually shifting to 5th as soon as I could in most cases.

It bugs me that I am getting 23mpg with such gentle driving. I've got all of that HP but never tip into it because I am focussed on wringing each mpg out of the car. I should probably just ignore the mpg and drive the car like it feels good to drive... if I wanted mpg I should have gotten the accord.

BTW I thought I remebered a group consensus earlier that on these new cars we should change th oil around 4500miles. Is this what others remember?

EXACTLY! If you want mpg, buy an economy car. If you buy a 30k car, then the gas should not matter.

My dealer said to change the breakin oil at 3500 mile, no more no less. I have a 2002 TL.

Cool

My understanding was that the first oil change was 3 months or 3750 miles. You may be due now, with 4K miles.

In my 2000, I noticed the gas mileage getting much better after my first oil change at 6000 miles. Maybe my driving changed, but it basically went from 21 mpg to 25 mpg.

Whatever you do, don't change before 7500 miles unless you've broken the 6 month threshold. If you change the breakin oil too early you could void your warranty.....

I had the oil on my 2001 changed about a month ago, with 3700 miles, and I noticed my gas mileage has been worse since the change. But then again, up until about 3 weeks ago, I never used the A/C, so maybe the deterioration in mileage is due to my more frequent use of the A/C. Anyone have this happen? DA
