Question Fuel Mileage

I have 1000 miles on my 2001 TL. Have not gotten better than 18.5 MPG. Does it get better and when?

Thanks

Unfortunately, it most likely won't get any better.

Check my mileage out. I'd be happy to get 18mpg. My Mileage over 12K miles

I get 15 mpg most of the time. If you want great mileage, go easy on gas.

That's only for highways. Unless you live on the highway and your destination is on the same friggin highway, there is no way you get that mileage. I average out 15 on both local streets and highways. And don't forget, the LA traffic is really bad.

On my last tank I 26.7mpg doing some pretty soft acceleration (was trying for record high mpg) throughout most of the tank. But towards the end, I was late for an appointment and sped like crazy. I could have gotten more.

Does the dash display tell your mpg or do you calculate it between fillups?

Good one!!!!! You're funny! It doesn't really take a mathmatician to calculate it out.

I asked wether or not there is a mpg display. You know, how some cars show it as your driving. Whats that have to do with being a mathmatician?

Momma just got 24 mpg on last fillup. Just turned 600 miles so she's taking it easy. This is mixed city/highway in central Florida. Guess the trick is to lighten up the right foot.

Well, I was kinda sleepy so I guess I didn't explain my idea clearly...

I meant that if I rev the engine to above something like 4500rpm. I find that when the VTEC engages, it consume a lot more gas. More than other cars at high rev... But that's just how I feel...

Maybe you can explain what VTEC kicks in means? I thought VTEC was the way the engine works. Didn't know it only works at certain rpm's? Please enlighten me. Only thing I know about cars is how to change the oil and oil filter.

Your gas mileage will go up in the spring, probably 2-3 MPG. Then in the summer, it will drop again if you use the A/C frequently. In the fall, back up again. In the winter... well you get the picture.

Whatever people tell you, gas mileage does NOT get better after "break-in".

See my gas mileage figures at my picture link. You can see the trend.

My gas mileage is good because I practice efficient driving habits, and I don't sit in traffic much at all.

Went 335 miles before first fillup. It took 14.5 gal. So far on second tank I've gone 100 miles on 1/4 tank. Using 92 octane, 70/30 city/hwy, taking it easy on the accels.(trying to break her in easy).

The MDX has it

I average about 24-25mpg with moderate to heavy acceleration and 50/50 city/hwy driving.

That stuff about gas mileage NOT going up is malarkey in my case. While I was breaking in my car, I never, NEVER had the engine over 3000 rpms. I got terrible gas mileage. For the first 6000 miles I averaged 22.39 mpg with a worst of 19.95 mpg. Since then, with some oil & filter changes (non-synthetic oil BTW) I have averaged 24.61 mpg. I floor it every time I get onto the highway for varying amounts of time and I use SS quite often. I will say that I rarely sit in traffic and usually drive 80-90 on the highway. My driving is 50/50 highway/city. I can't explain it, but I'm loving it!!!

Most people mistakenly say that VTEC "kicks in" at high RPM. In fact, VTEC merely has two different cam profiles: one that works at low revs for better throttle response and MPG at low RPM, and the other to improve power at higher RPM. It's the best of both worlds, really, and it's always doing it's job.

When they talk about VTEC "kicking in" they are referring to when the engine switches to high-performance mode, more or less.

You ever sit next to an old muscle car that's all hot-rodded out at a traffic light and notice that it idles all rough? That's B/C the engine is tuned to operate best while running hard, and not when idling. Well, VTEC is tuned to run well at low RPM and also well at high RPM, kinda like being an econo car while cruising and a sports car while gunning it.

In fact, that's where the term "hot rod" began: from those muscle cars that had high-performance camshafts installed to run better when being driven hard. VTEC gives the best of both worlds, and is always "engaged" no matter what anyone says otherwise.

The onle better solution is continously-variable camshaft mapping, which is more or less like having an infinite number of possible valving permutations. I believe that the nicer Lexuses and BMWs use this now?

My first fill up was only like 120 miles (like 7.5 gallons), anyhow it averaged to 16.1 MPG. The car was and still is new, it only had 40 miles when I got it. It's got 302 now and I'm going to fill up again on my way home tomorrow. I'll repost my mileage then. I've still got my window sticker, and this is what it says for MPG.

City MPG: 19
Highway MPG: 29

I think the highway was ran at 55, I think that's how the DOE/EPA run it. Remember that those numbers are not computed by Acura but by the DOE/EPA independently. I'm guessing that 18.5 and 25/26 are more practical depending on what speeds you're traveling at in town and on the highway. I think 25/26 is more practical if you're going 65 or 70. At the bottom it says that you should be between 16 and 22 in town and 24 and 34 on the highway (will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits and vehicle condition). Anyhow, thought I'd share that since I got the window sticker handy.

Actually a better term for the highway mileage estimate is "non-city" driving. I think that in the test for highway driving, the average speed is 48 mph. The highway test is NOT simply setting the cruise control at a given speed and measuring the mpg. Most dealerships have a brochure explaining how the tests are performed and the speeds at which they travel.

I guess it doesn't matter if it's CITY or HIGHWAY when you live in LA huh? You're still in stop and go traffic no matter what. Highway driving means no start stop. You're gonna get low mpg until you make long trips.

I drive on the highway...but only 15 minutes...barely enough to warm up. So my mpg is quite low too.

I drive pretty hard in L.A. and I get about 19-20 MPG. I drove to Vegas for New Years Eve and averaged around 80-85 MPH and got 26 MPG.

Its all in how you drive. VTEC can guzzle gas. Jack Rabbit starts from a dead stop will guzzle gas, punching the accelerator to change lanes will guzzle gas too.

I don't think using Sport Shift is necessarily that bad for gas mileage, and it prolongs the life of your brakes! It just depends on how you're using the Sport Shift. I read a review in Motor Trend that said the TL actually will get to 60MPH faster if you don't use SportShift because most drivers cannot do much better at optimum shifting than the car can on it's own.

My MPG is pretty high as a full tank can get about 400 miles most of the time : mine are mostly highway though (85%) & I avoid traffic/traffic lights at all cost I normally drive between 75~85 on freeway.

Just checked mine for this last tank. 20MPG with both Highway and city driving on the tank. I think that's fine.
