Free Sub. Now what to do with it?

Okay so today my buddy called me up and asked if i would have a use for a JBL 10" sub from a guy who just upgraded his and was giving it to him for free since they work together. So ofcourse i said yes. Now my question is what should i do with it since its just 1 and its only a 10. I feel like it wont hit hard enough in the trunk but I dont know maybe it will. I've heard you shouldnt mix stock subs with aftermarket so I figure i'll have to disconnect my stock one and find a place for this new one and buy a decnet amp. What do you guys think would be a good way to do this.

I had a 12" JL in the trunk, so the first thing you're gonna need if you're gonna decide to use that sub is an amplifier. Atleast a 150x2, and you can bridge the channels. and unplug the harness to the stock sub and slice it to some RCA cables after you cut em to expose the twisted pair of wires. I have a thread from a while back, when I did this.

Oh. I'm pretty new at wiring things like this so maybe you can help me through this haha. Your saying that i can bridge it so that both subs work together? and run off of one amp?

If i were you, a ten inch from jl probably a w6, use a very good amp and have a good battery. Upgrade your HU and your set. Trust me it'll hit hard my cousin had only a 10" in his Teg and that shit was setting off alarms at a very low decibal for the bass settings....

lol. get a new box first... depending on what kind of JBL it is, I'm nearing the ballpark of 1.7 - 2.0 cu^ft tuned @ 33hz. You'll hit some very nice notes along with gettin the low rush, but for that, i'd suggest 1.9 @ 32hz. It'll slam. Just make sure you're pushing some efficient power to the sub. A new headunit will benefit greatly due to multiple settings you can adjust for some SQ and the headunit itself will let you control your sub's volume. And as far as amplifiers go, www.sonicelectronix.com ... I've bought quite a few items from there some time ago. They have great customer service. I haven't bought anything recently from there as I am now in Pro Mobile Audio and don't mess around with mainstream vendor garbage. But find out the model and post it, I'll give you a few choices to look at and then you can decide on your budget.

Oh and some more info, if you're going to buy a headunit, spend some decent cash for it so you have all those extras and trust me, once you learn how to use it and know some simple audio stuff, X-Overs, EQing, etc, you'll love it. I'd suggest the Alpine CDA 9886 or Pioneer's Premier Line DEH-P700BT. Both have great features and wide range of adjustable characteristics for sound tuning.

But I'd prefer more on Alpine than Pioneer if you want some really good SQ.

Is it really heavy, is the magnet encased in a aircooled looking plastic with fins? Does the cone say anything? Or is the cone just silver (chrome like, not gray)and say "JBL" only.

Got a pic?

Ok Thats a JL Audio sub, not JBL. From that pic it could be anything from an older JL W0 to a W6. If its a older W6 its a great sub, and you should be happy with its SQ. If ita a W0 its a entry level (Well a decent entry level) sub. Either way its good cause it was free!

Ok, after seeing the magnet, there is no way thats a W6. Most likely a W0. Get a 150 to 300 watt amp and you'll be fine.. Not going to win any bump offs, but it should complament your stereo nicely.

Alright thanks. Yea I noticed it was a JL after i got it. Was told originally it was JBL but guess it wasnt. I'll shoot for a 300 watt amp. Any suggestions on what specific ones that are good?

Just 1 will work, cause it looks like a single Voice Coil Sub.

Alright cool. I got quoted $410 for an amp, box and install by a local audio store. That seems a little high to me but I've also never invested in any of this before.

yea that looks like a W0 the magnet is really small, W6 has a fat magnet. 410 is way too much for a box and amp I have a 4 Channel amp I'm looking to get rid of lemme know. For the sub box it should run you box 60-100 bux. the wiring is really not that hard, the hardest part is getting the power wire from the engine bay into the car.
