The First '99 3.2 TL-S 6MT

That's right guys... I've been talking here and there about doing the conversion... but a-last, I'm starting the conversion tonight! I'm going to try to get everything done before April's Florida Mega Meet. It'll be a long process (probably about 1.5 months because of school and work) so I'll update you guys with pics as I go along. It's time to put an end to the hideous tranny problems I have now.

The Sways will be on their way soon along with a Tein Basic setup (hoping ), and everything else are already coming in the mail from the lip kit, clutch set, shifter, cables, etc. I got my compressor and tools on clearance for only $145 so I'm happy with that purchase The only thing I'm missing is the Helms manual, I've looked all over and haven't been able to find a retailer with one in stock for the '03 CL-S 6MT. If you do find such a place, it'd be a huge help. Also, anyone that wants my gauge cluster (for the '99) with the complete LED conversion (white + blue) done do it, let me know and I'll give it away to you for a reasonable price. Thanks!

The first batch of pics will come sometime tonight. Wish me luck!

Its not as bad as one might think. Having most the parts before hand makes it alot easier. 7/8's of the time it took me was waiting for parts. Having all teh parts first, i could probably pull it off in a weekend.

^ check the local yards around you, you'll be surprised at what you find. On car-part.com, there's a selection of very few, but if you take the time to go through 100's of listings you'll find the tranny for less than 1k.

i felt bad he snapped his comptech front sway bar right in front of my house right after ripping it down the street. i didnt think that the drive train loss was tthat much for the slush box auto but i guess it is. i have driven a cls6 and it didnt seem as mean as his car was. he was also going to convert the steering to the closer ratio on the clp, did he do that already?

fsttyms1, the two parts, CLUTCH PEDAL 46910-S3M-A01 & CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET 46990-S84-A01. Do they come with all of the necessary bolts/nuts as shown in this diagram when they're bought from carland?

Wow, I love this manual transmission conversion threads. Kris's (fsttyms1) thread on his conversion is a classic.

Definitely post photos as you go. And, if it's not too much trouble, keep track of the total cost and the hours involved.

Best of Luck!

Bob

You don't need a new car, just get a 6MT and the various parts.. for you, it'd be a $1.5-2k mod, where as me.. i'm aiming for $3-4K. lol

Hey Guys.... By request, I was asked to keep track of spending... While ordering more parts, I took the liberty of braking down the price list for you for my swap (so far, things may change). Each person's price list will vary by the type of swap they're doing... i.e. just the tranny and engine parts will be cheaper if you already have the -S , engine+tranny if you have the -P, etc.

Keep in mind that the prices for the harness and ECU were not included.

This is for those that already have the MT Type-S and just need the tranny:

Product SKU# Description Unit Price
90166-S3M-A00 BOLT, FLANGE (12X25) $1.84
50827-S3M-A00 BRACKET, RR. ENGINE MOUNTING $84.90
50810-S3M-A01 RUBBER ASSY., RR. ENGINE MOUNTING $120.94
22105-PGE-305 CLUTCH SET $235.34
90011-PGE-000 BOLT (12MM) (8 of them) $17.44
54100-S3M-A01 LEVER SUB-ASSY., CHANGE $62.28
54310-S3M-A01 WIRE, CHANGE $115.52
46960-S3M-A01 PIPE A, CLUTCH $4.54
46970-S3M-A01 PIPE B, CLUTCH $6.74
50806-S3M-A03 RUBBER, RR. TRANSMISSION MOUNTING $39.98
50805-S3M-A03 RUBBER, FR. TRANSMISSION MOUNTING $28.26
77230-S3M-A01ZA HOLDER ASSY., CUP $86.30
47105-S3M-A04ZA LEVER ASSY., PARKING BRAKE $49.94
47537-671-670 SPRING, PARKING BRAKE ROD $1.36
47522-594-000 NUT, PARKING BRAKE ADJUSTING $0.76
47365-538-000 PIN, EQUALIZER $0.48
47360-SB2-000 EQUALIZER $1.44
46600-S3M-A51 PEDAL ASSY., BRAKE $54.08
46910-S3M-A01 PEDAL, CLUTCH 49.38
46990-S84-A01 BRACKET, CLUTCH PEDAL $20.02
46922-S3M-A01 MASTER CYLINDER ASSY., CLUTCH $55.46
46965-S5A-013 TANK, CLUTCH FLUID $15.42
46961-S3M-A02 HOSE, CLUTCH $21.62
83414-S3M-A01ZA BOOT ASSY., CHANGE LEVER $96.66
37850-PGE-A01 CONTROL UNIT, BYPASS VALVE $72.28

Subtotal: $1,242.98
6MT Tranny $850-$1500
Total -> $2,092-$2742

And for those who do buy the -S engine but need to covert it for the 6MT, here's the addition to the list from above.

13621-PGE-A11 PULLEY, TIMING BELT DRIVE $56.98
37850-PGE-A01 CONTROL UNIT, BYPASS VALVE $72.28
37500-PGE-A11 SENSOR ASSY., CRANK $421.44
37501-PGE-A10 SUB-HARNESS, CRANK SENSOR $15.94
37840-PGE-A11 SENSOR ASSY., TDC $115.56
37841-PGE-A10 SUB-HARNESS, TDC (1-2) $8.46

Subtotal: $1,956.54
6MT Tranny $850-$1500
Total -> $2,806-$3456

For my price, since I'm buying my engine, ecu, and harness from another member on this board, here's my price breakdown...

$1,242.98 (From the first list)
$2,500 (Engine, ECU, Harness, Sensors)
$850 (Tranny)

Total: $4592 (So Far, this excludes tools used) <- This total may still decrease since I'm still searching for used parts. I have to admit, that's not bad for a permanent fix to the failing tranny. It's the same price as getting another tranny from the dealership if you're out of your warranty, but only much more dependable.

^If there's any errors in the list, I'll fix it later on.

I'm off to bed.

I never understood why they didn't make the TL-S in manual as an option from the start? Good luck with the project and be sure to post lots of pics, and a vid when it's all done. Hope it goes smoothly for you.

You guys are truely awesome. This is going to be sweet to have 2 of these on here i bet a few more are going to be joining the club and doing this too. Just wondering since your current auto is failing is it the original or a replacement? Also how many miles do you have at the time of the swap.

Well, i'm still running on the salvage replacement I got back in august. Slowly, but surely, it'll crap out on me. Now, whenever it's cold (after sitting for an entire night), it will not shift past 1st unless i put it into nuetral than back into D4 again. Once it gets warm, it shifts normally. My original died at 170k, and this one's crapping out at just over 190k. Yeah... 30k in so little time. I know. lol There will be a few joining this as well since I see a few members saving up to do this over the summer. There's no certain mileage you have to go by before doing the swap, you just do it whenever you want.. or if your tranny dies. haha

Make that 4 ... there was someone else over in the east coast that already did the conversion. I found the car online a while ago.

Quick Question: The Greddy Evo 2 Catback exhaust for the CL-S, would that be a direct bolt-on for my TL-P? I've looked all over even in the CL forum but wasn't able to find an answer. This is also on my list

it will work but it will be a little bit short. you can get it extended for cheap though.

Just because your putting in some CL parts doesnt mean every thing you buy has to be for the CL. It will work but it will be short., it will need to be extended
