Post FINALLY! AEM CAI vs. ICEBOX

ok....finally got the icebox on and dynoed compared to the aem cai

1) AEM CAI
213.9 hp
193.9 lb

2) AEM CAI
Comptech Headers
HKS Exhaust
229.1hp
202.8 lb

3) Comptech ICEBOX
Comptech Headers
HKS Exhaust
231.9 hp
207.6 lb

Dyno:

The green line is the 1st dyno. The red is the 2nd and the Blue the 3rd.
You can see the high end gain from the headers from 1st to 2nd dyno.
On the 3rd dyno, you can see where the mid-range was tuned out and there was a good gain of hp. What i noticed is that the car would get .5-1 hp from just cooling down.

My gallery has a dyno video of the AEM CAI on page 3. here:
http://www.acurainspired.com/gallery...album80&page=3

the dyno of the comptech icebox sound is on page 6 here:
http://www.acurainspired.com/gallery...album80&page=6

also here are some sample pics from the dyno:

Question

So,what does this mean?
If I install an Ice Box on my stock 2003 TLs without any mods, what type of additional HP and Torque could I anticipate compared to an AEM CAI?

Thx

It looks like you have 10-12 additional hp & ftlb tq thru the entire rpm range until you get to the top. That's pretty impressive!
To the Ice Box!

not to rain the parade, but I'm not sure I'd call these numbers conclusive because of lack of runs. You can easily see a 5 hp difference between 2 consecutive runs on the same car without changing any mods. Especially on a car like the TLS since 5 whp is only like 2% of the car's power. There are too many variables in the equation to produce exact numbers.

On the other hand, I would expect the ice box to have the slight adavantage do to better thermal insulation. So the numbers do make sense. Thanks for the info.

so you did 28 runs all in one day? And then compiled averages of the the runs with the same mods? I guess I wasn't looking too closely. I read it as one run with stock exhaust manifolds + AEM, one run with AEM + comptech headers and one run with CT headers + icebox. So are the runs you used/posted to represent the 3 different tuning states of your car the highest, lowest or middle of the line runs?

How much more 'noise' does the Icebox make over stock, is it as loud as the CAI?

the sound of the icebox is supposedly as quite as the stock. Quite a sleeper isn't it.

Thats what I want to know also as the sound of the AEM is the only reason I dont have one. I had one on the old Accord, and loved the power, but on this car I want to be able to punch it without having people down the block turn their heads.

In the vid it seems like its a little quieter, but its hard to say. Even stock on a dyno in an enclosed garage, the cars are louder than they are on the open road.

If it is significantly quieter looks like I just found another way to blow a cuple of hundred on the ride.

im with you mr hyde. the aem screams, but its screaming "i want attention" now, i understand why people like it, but i personally would start to get annoyed after a while. overall though, aem made a great intake. im just happy that comptech made one too, thats better and most importantly quiet!!! too bad i am still waiting for mine

VTECTLTypeS, ride looking sweet as usual. Thanx for posting your results.

I'd rather have the "quieter" solution.

Friend of mine recently got nailed for a "loud exhaust" ticket. I've never heard of such BS. He had to take a day, sit in court to have the judge give him a $5 fee for "broken exhaust". I know we're talking about intakes here, just a side note on noise/loud. Stealth is better IMO. Let the civics with the 5" tailpipes fart around town with their whopping 118 hp.

kgoessling: My dealer sells, installs and warranties everything Comptech except the Supercharger (warranty that is)...

The CL guys talk as if this is a much greater gain...It does haev a broader band all the way around, but I'd miss the sound of my Injen...Then again, I'm tired of people asking me "what's wrong with your car, it's hissing?"...

I just got my AEM CAI not too long ago and I freaking love it...though, I must admit I can't wait to get my exhaust and headers put in(once I get them in)...I like that video and your car is sweet.

Well, I was thinking of switching from the Injen to the Icebox, but for only 2hp and 5lbs or torque.. I'll stick with the Injen.

If I didn't already have a CAI I'd be going with the Comptech no question. Too bad it took them so long to develop such an intake.

Anyway, nice pics and good info! Love your car too.. the white rims with the blue car is a nice contrast.

juniorbean, look at the whole graph. There is consistantly 10hp, 10lbs gains all the way to the top. At 5600-5800 rpm it's more like 15hp, and 12lbs tq. And only when you get to the very top, where you hit peak hp, is where it's only 2hp more. The rest of it on the way up is very impresive.
