Angry Factory Delays TL shipments

Read a post on Edmunds dated May 7th that the factory is delaying shipments for a month. I went to a Ardmore Pa dealer whose lot was bare of TLP's and only one TLS which was sold. Anyone heard of this in their area.

I've been told that there's a delay and it's related to the window problem, but I've yet to hear how long production is down for. Has anyone heard anything definitive?

I just came from the dealership (ANOTHER TEST DRIVE) And he said they should start getting more cars by the end of the month. The delay is due to the window problem.

See ya,

I WONDER if this has anything to do with them taking care of early production run problems?

Bought my TLS 2 weeks ago in Willow Grove, PA. Was told I was lucky, they are now only taking orders for July/August since there was a production stop due to backlog. Can't seem to produce enough to catch up with the orders. I placed my order early March, arrived 4/25.
Didn't hear anything about the windows.

Nice to see all the Philly/South Jersey TL, or future TL owners. Welcome to the board.

My car came in last week. I was told that the problem with the window is when you raise it. When you release the switch, sometimes the window does not stop raising. The part is supposed to be in this week; then I can take delivery.

That's good one. They can't keep up with all of the orders so they'll stop production! That makes alot of sense to me! What a joke.

I would have to say that the production stop is related to the window recall and it's their attemp to inflate the price since no one is willing to pay MSRP in this economic conditions. I would also bet that the demand for the TL-S was not what they thought it might have been.

Again, all this stuff about the cars being "hard to get", "selling like hotcakes", blah blah blah is nothing more than dealer hype. Any decent dealer can get you any car - if there are cars on the lot, he can get more. Car manufacturers don't make money but not having enough cars to sell, don't fall for this silly stuff.

Why would Acura (Corporate)care about inflating their prices? They get the paid the same amount when they sell the cars to the dealers (invoice) whether the dealer charges $25,000 or $37,000.

Unless they're trying to help the dealers?

Go try to find an MDX that isn't marked up $2-4K over MSRP or find a dealer who doesn't have a 2-6 month waiting list at MSRP. They can only build 40K MDX's per year and demand has way outstripped supply. In fact, at many dealers, their entire allotment of 2001's is sold-out.

As for the TL/TL-S. Acura ordered parts from third party suppliers sufficient to build 70K cars per year of which they estimate 1/3 will be TL-S' and 20% will be equipped with Navi. The Japanese demand from their suppliers just in time parts delivery. This means that suppliers produce and deliver parts according to a schedule developed long before the first car was ever manufactured. If demand suddenly increases or if they were wrong in estimating the equipment ratios it is entirely possible that there could be shortages of specific models and equipment.

Assuming the Ohio plant has additional capacity, it would still take Acura some time to get additional volumes of parts from third party suppliers who would have to ramp-up production in order for Acura to increase output.

Acura also wants their dealer network happy and profitable. By carefully managing supply and demand they can help dealers sell cars at a higher profit. They can then demand more from the dealers in terms of facility improvements, loaner car provision, and other customer service type offerings. Everyone has been complaining that Acura dealerships need to move more up-market like Lexus and Infiniti. This is how it's paid for. It’s worked for them so far with the MDX and 2002 TL/TL-S and I’m sure they’ll try to create some scarcity with the new RSX. On the other hand, they over estimated demand for the CL/CL-S and they are selling for pretty close to invoice.

As for the current shortage, I do believe Acura has held cars at the factory to repair the power window control defect. Correcting the problem before the cars leave the factory rather than through the dealer network will save them tons of money.

You're right they do charge MSRP. They also require mandatory options like side steps, fender flares, front bumper trim, and tailgate air deflectors. Oh, and by the way, they charge double Acura's suggested price for those accessories. I also own an MDX, I know. My dealer has one on the lot he'll sell you at MSRP. You just have to take it with the $10K worth of accessories they've installed on it including a DVD entertainment system. If you want more information go to acuramdx.org.
