Post -- is extended warranty worth it? --

Perhaps this is entered in the wrong discussion forum. I was wondering if any of your purchased one of the various extended warranty plans that Acura provides. I purchased the car and definitely keeping it for beyond 5 years. Should I spend the extra $$$ for bumper-to-bumper coverage?

Computer components are very costly to replace and with the extra coverage, I have that peace of mind. However, the quality of Japanese components is high and perhaps it's just money poorly spent. (I had zero electronic problems whatsoever with my '91 Accord EX...)

Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A few comments:

1) It is not an extended warranty like the dealer would have you believe, but instead an extended service contract. It works like a health insurance policy on your car after the warranty expires. You'll probably have to pay a deductible, not everything is covered and you'll usually have to pay for repairs up front and then present a claim for reimbursement.

2) You can buy a policy later on if you want one; there's no reason to get it from the dealer when you buy the car except that you will be able to include it in your finance payments.

3) The policy Acura is trying to sell you is underwritten by a 3rd party company; this is not an Acura product.

4) You will be able to find a much better deal elsewhere - try looking for a policy for under a grand. I believe Geico Insurance sells such a policy, and they're a reputable company.

5) As with all insurance policies, they are like gambling in reverse and the insurance company is out to make money. If they weren't making money, they wouldn't sell these policies. The odds are that the policy will cost more than they will pay out in repairs - that's how they make money.

6) Hey, it's an Acura! Do you really expect to need repairs in the first 100,000 miles?!?

If you still want such a policy for peace of mind I understand. You might start by searching the net for extended service, extended maintenence and breakdown policy. Also try calling your insurance company.

I say DONT GET IT, especially for the reasons given by Gomez above. And if u really really have to have it to sleep better 6 years from now, definetly do not get it from a dealer, cause its a lot more money.

Ditto. Compared with possible real repairs, I think you'll pay more by purchasing the extended warranty. Like Gomez said, how would those companies survive if everyone is going to use that.

AAA offers something like that. If you really want it, you can shop around to find the best deal rather than going straight to the Acura dealer.

This is the same thing I had to go through when deciding whether or not I should get the extended warranty. What my dealer offered though was a cash back option. There was a seperate contract that I filled out that if I didn't claim any warranty work after the 50,000 mile or 4 year warranty period, and that the extended warranty expired, that I would get a full refund. I figured why not, since it was only a grand. I got the 100k/5 year extended warranty option since I'll be driving around 30k miles a year.

I just looked into this for my wife's van.

Check out www.warrantydirect.com. You can buy a 5 yr./150,000 mile warranty from them for $1300 which covers basically everything but routine maintenance and normal wear and tear items (ties, breaks, etc.). Only thing I saw that would be excluded was the nav system.

The good thing about this one is that the 5 years begins when you buy the policy. If you wait until just before your warranty expires, you can get another 5 years and up to 150,000 total miles of coverage. I talked to them on the phone, and they said that they pay the repair center directly, so you don't have to pay for it and then submit for reimbursement. Deductible is only $50.

If we keep my wife's POS Windstar, we will buy this policy (it's more like $1600 for the Windstar, it being a POS and all) right before the warranty expires.

Check out www.autowarranty.com . I got great rates on their exclusionary warranty (i.e. their policies warrant everything BUT certain parts of your car).

The Acura Care contracts sold at most Acura dealers are product of Acura. They are sold and administered by American Honda Finance Company. The contracts are worth every penny if you intend to keep the car past the factory warranty period. This is the voice of experience talking

This is GEICO's version of the extended warranty called Mechanical Breakdown. It costs me $21 for 6 months.

I had the Geico "warranty" on my '97 Accord EX until I passed the 100K miles. I used it once for a window regulator that went bad on the driver's side. The $500 repair cost me $250 deductable plus $15/mo. on top of the policy (had it for 2 yrs before getting to 100K, commute a long way). The policy covers anything that is not subject to normal wear and tear (timing belts, brake pads, etc.). Also, the repair facility has to call Geico and have the repair pre-approved for coverage to kick in.

I was just reviewing the anti-service contract post toward the top. First, as I said in my last reply, the Acura Care contracts are a product of Acura. They are sold through dealers by American Honda Finance Company, and the claims are administered by the same company. There are various levels of coverage, but the top is an exclusionary policy. This means that the only parts not covered is listed under "parts not covered". Everything else is covered. The only parts typically not covered are maintenance items (oil changes, brake pads, hoses, spark plugs) and body parts (that's what insurance is for). The typical deductible is $50....much cheaper than replacing that engine, transmission, or ABS modulator entirely at your own expense.

I went with the Acura warranty, 100K, 0 Deduct, 7 years. $1200. ( Inital offer was $1800). For me knowing car is covered beyond the payments gives me peace of mind.
Just my $.02.

A lot of you guys are wrong:
More than $4,000 dollars have been spend on my car for repairs, I don't want to go into details, but just yesterday (now I have 50130 miles on my car) The fan on the radiator broke and a hose. I'm taking my car today to acura under warranty, because this happen before 50000 miles, the iddler is bad, they didn't have the part until today.
