Exhaust resonator

Exhaust resonator
Hi newbie question here.
I've read some searches and saw that if you have comptech axle backs you can increase the sound if you remove or replace the resonator. Which one is it? Is it the one closer to the cat or the one closer to the rear? Also, what size would I get? 14,16,18? I'm a bit confused. I'm assuming that the smaller the louder. I just don't want it to sound completely rediculous! Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks ahead of time!

You remove teh larger of the 2. By removing it it will get louder. Not so much loud outside the car but the droaning inside will become Very annoying. As for the resonator size thats up to what you find comfortable

For TLP stock B pipe, the resonator is the one closer to the cat. The pre-muffler is the one closer to the rear. The resonator has no sound absorption material. Both serve to reduce noise even though they use different techniques.
Comptech B pipe has no resonator, just a pre-muffler. Neuspeed catback has a resonator and no pre-muffler. Both are louder than stock.

The one closest to the mufflers is the one you want to remove to make a difference in sound

18" is what i have and its loud enough, the droaning from my exhaust tends to annoy some of my passengers (not that i care). Its not so loud that i can be heard from 1/2 a ile away, but it can definitley be heard.
if u want ur car to sound a little more subtle, go with 22", it won't sound as obvious that you've modded the exhaust but you'll still be able to hear it for sure.
I kno the Apexi WS exhaust uses an 18" resonator.

What size is our stock piping on a TL-S? Is it 2.25" or 2.5" or am I way off? I was thinking about doing this myself. I just wanted to know what size inlet to get...

obviously if u want to put in wider piping find one with a 2.5in. inlet/2.25in. outlet so u can fit 2.5in. pipes from the cat

i know that it is the engine. but is the sound excaping from the tips or the rsonator. im guessing the exhaust now that i think of it. so if i were to take the resonator out is it bolted onto the exhaust or is it welded. at work and dont have time to go look.

Sorry miss read you. Did you ever make noises into a pipe as a kid (like paper towel roll or pvc pipe, and the tube amplifys sound and resonance, same thing with exhaust pipe.
Considering that a resonator helps eliminate the sound id have to say its from the end of the exhaust. Or it may be that the added back pressure in the pipe slows down the sound enough to keep it from being transmitted thru the pipe.
As for getting it installed, you mean uninstalled? we alreay have teh resonator on the piping. It should be a matter of 20-40 bucks. to cut it out and weld in a piece of pipe in its place.
now if you already have the resonator removed, price will varry on what kind of res you buy and whos selling it

My TL is stock, no CAI. And if I use the A/C and listen to the stereo, I don't really notice the exhaust on the freeway. But around town I can hear it as long as I don't drown it out with the stereo.

One on the right for me
if you do cut out the resonator and dont like the sound, you can always just have the shop weld in a smaller one and see if that brings the tone more in range with what you are looking for

To me it sounds like a toned down version of the 350Z exhaust note. I like it a lot, it gives the TL a little more soul. I have Pilot 3.5" exhaust tips, and they look really good to go along with the sound. I'm not a fan of AEM exhausts.

toned down 350Z. hmm. i like the 350Z's sound. how toned down like volume wise or like note wise. i would like both to match as closely as possible.

nothing to worry about. Get your car down to the exhaust shop and have them remove the resonator already
