Thumbs down Exhaust Pipes Rusty. Now causing issues =(

Looked at my car the other day and noticed that one of my exhaust outlets was hanging close to the ground, while the other was in the right place.

Figuring the holder my be off or loose I pulled the car into the garage and jacked it up and crawled under for a look. To my surprise I found that where the final outlet (sorry, I'm bad with names, I think Axelback?) the resonating chamber plus tip, gets bolted to the rest of the muffler (looks like a J pipe) one of the bolt holes had completely rusted through and it wasn't connected anymore!

I put it back in place and tightened up the other bolt (it was loose as well) as a temporary stopgap but I'm obviously going to have to fix this...

Any advice?

are there exhausts for the TL that are full setups? not just axelbacks? I think the ATLP one is the whole thing, but then again I don't really know...

thanks!

ATLP, WS2... Or any exhaust from a 98-02 Accord V6 coupe ( need to extend piping 2.5"-3".) OR the 98-02 Accord V6 Sedan should bolt right up.

I have a Tanabe Hyper Medallion from a AV6 COUPE and had to extend it about 2.5-3" and it fits great!

if you do get the WS2, make sure you paint the piping as the Apexi piping is going to rust more than others

Get stainless if you don't want it to rust, expect to spend $$$.

Exactly what part are you talking about? The flange on the B pipe where the mufflers bolt up or the flange on the mufflers?

a muffler shop can decide if a flange/joint is fixable or needs to be cut out and replaced,
or a larger section of pipe needs to be purchased or custom made to fit on their bending machine

let the experts help you in person

they can test the cat for function/performance too

near the end of the system, where the axelbacks (mufflers) bolt to the Y pipe.

Literally the last bolts before the muffler and exhaust tips.

the numbers repeat alot but the sequencing is 28-2-14

so the grommet right before the outlet in the back of the car.

I cleaned it off considerably and used de-ruster (sp?) to expose some viable metal and then used metal to metal epoxy to bind the two pipes and bolts together for the time being until I can either take it to a muffler shop or get a new system. metal to metal epoxy is a temp hold because the amount of heat that runs through that will eventually melt it (I give it a week..)

So the "flange" is rusted out. Any muffler shop could repair it with new flanges or weld the pipes together for you.

You dont have to buy a catback, you can just spend $75 to get it welded. Everything after my cat is welded together (I have an additional vibrant resonator)

^thanks!

yeah I figured that out a little after posting haha. I'm gonna have them do that soon, man it's one thing after another now a days!

Predictably, the epoxy didn't hold (durr lol) but I found a little more elegant of a solution: I can't recal the name atm but it's from the plumbing section and its rolled like tape but it's metal and has 1/4" holes in it that you can screw into. Wrapped it tightly around both sides of the pipe and then screwed it down with a nut, my bumpy morning commute? held up just fine.

I'll get it welded next week (get paid today) I just needed to hold it temporarily

thats called `Plumbers tape` metal strapping tape, and is normally used to support a pipe hanging from a beam,, or you may have seen used to secure a water heater to the wall,, so earthquakes dont shake it off the platform = major gas leak and 50 gal of verrrrry hot water on the garage floor,,,

but maybe water will reduce the fire from the broken gas line!!

Ahh, hanger strap... such a multipurpose product. Used it recently to attach a fuel filter after I discovered the mtg. bracket was missing.
