Thermostat might be faulty, make sure you check your coolant and see if its leaking anywhere. Also check your resorvoir and make sure you have enough backup coolant.

Are you losing fluid?
It's very very bad to run the engine that hot. Blown head gaskets will hit your wallet very hard.
Get it looked at immediately.

redlined temp in a TL- thats not good
If you dont have the skills to diagnose, get it to a shop right away and stop driving it...
unless you have 3 grand dying to get out of your pocket

id take it and get it looked at asap. my 96 altima had a similar problem... minus telling me it was overheating.

just so happened that i was 180 miles into a 370 mile drive... when my engine decided to throw a rod.

lesson here is, take that shit in with the quickness. get whatever it is fixed while its still minor.

may also be a faulty sensor. Either way you should have it looked at. Are you using radiator fluid at all?

I had a similar issue with my 89 acura legend. Basically one of the fan was not working. The mechanic also change my thermostat. After he change it, it was ok. I would get that fix right away man....

Check first for any leak of antigel .... then check if you have any heat coming from the centre air unit when you put the heat on if yes then your thermostat is fine ...
Open your hood and check the antigel's hoses ( top (in radiator ) and bottom (back to engine) )if they are both hot ...you might have a overheat problem at the radiator level ( 'cause when rolling the cold air will cool the antigel and stoping in traffic will start heating up your engine .....

Oh yeah I forgot .....a failing water pump could lead you to a overheating problem ( poor circulation of cooling ) what is your mileage and did you change your timing belt and h2o pump?

I am thinking flow prob in radiator-plugged radiator, or weak hose collapses- but that would be under suction when at speed not idle- so sticking with flow prob

At idle its all about flow- With a fresh pump and coolant that rules out half the problem

Is the drive belt-accessory belt good- the tensioner is good- The belt could be going and slipping or the tensioner not holding it tight (not a gen1 expert) and the water pump doesnt turn fast enough at idle
Using logic of regular cars and how they work, vs acura methods

is your car throwing a CEL? If so check the code immediately, very well could be a crankshaft or camshaft position sensor which can cause your engine to overheat too.

same thing happened to me awhile ago, turns out the the reservoir has a tube inside that goes all the way to the bottom, well after my tranny was changed the tube got disconnected and my car would start to overheat, but only when i was stopped, took it back to the dealer and a master tech found it connected it back up and it hasn't overheated since....

I had a similar problem today, I was at a friends house sitting in her driving chit chatting for about 45 minutes and I noticed the gauge was up a little bit past half way, didn't think anything of it, it's 96 degrees and I was blasting the A/C on full blast with the windows down, no big deal, then about 10 minutes later I look and I'm 3/4 way to high. She knows a little about cars so I said I gotta get moving and see if it cools down, she agreed so I left. I didn't make it 3 car lengths from her driveway and the gauge dropped down to half way and by the time I was about 6 car lengths away the gauge was right where it always is..... I've never had any problems at stop lights or anything like that could this have been just a fluke or should I try and diagnose it as a problem?

With the ac on and hi ambient temps- it may get warm- need to know your year miles etc to think if its just time for normal maitenance and parts or a bigger issue
Was the driver side fan running?
Try it with no ac and see what it does both ways this week
check the driver side fan with no ac- with ac on both fans shuld run- there is a fan sensor that likes to fail

no worries. at first i thought you meant gen1 as in pre-facelift 2nd gen. then i reread it and i caught on to it.
