engine clicking noise when cold...

My mechanic told me my engine clicks when it's cold because I use synthetic oil.
How accurate is this?

Somehow, being that synthetics have been proven over and over, I would say that the better oil has nothing to do with the clicking. It is much more likely a little bit of valvetrain noise due to the engine temp, not oil. But, hey just my

First things first. Find another mechanic because this one is an idiot. The type of oil has nothing to do with your engine clicking. You most likely need your valves adjusted. Is the car around 100K miles? (Don't know the conversion to kilometers off hand) If it is, you're probably due for the 105K mile service which includes the timing belt, water pump, valve adjustment, spark plugs, etc. Once again, the fact that your oil is synthetic has nothing to do with the engine clicking.

find another mechanic. He is an IDIOT.
(if anything it will quiet them down and it gives better protection in the cold)

Sounds like you might have sticky lifters. On your next oil change you should try one of those engine flush fluids. You add it to the oil and idle (DO NOT DRIVE) your car for about 5 minutes, turn it off and change the oil. This cleans out all kinds of gunk you might have in the valve train area (could be causing your lifters to stick) as well as the oil passage ways. A popular one used by many here is Seafoam, 1/3 can in the oil, 1/3 in the fuel, and the last 1/3 via vacuum line to clean out the combustion chamber but any engine flush should suffice.

Adding it to the fuel will not do it. It needs to be added to the oil. If that doesnt work maybe look into having the valves adjusted to see if that takes care of it.

Your mechanic shouldn't be allowed to touch your car if he thought synthetic oil made your motor tick.

the noise might be coming from one of your belt tensioners.
