dyno results...

Dyno day at Godspeed today, dynoed my car.

84 degrees and raining outside... it was miserable. The car wouldn't shift into 3rd gear on the dyno (dyno pack) at first, but it finally went in. It was a bit odd.

Pulled all the way to redline, 239.8 hp and 211 ft-lbs. I/H/P/spacers.

I was hoping for good weather, but scattered t-storms everywhere.

Next up, J35 block is being sent out to a machine shop to get everything worked on, and balance the crankshaft blah blah blah; then it's CT SC time. Hopefully by the beginning of next season, I'll be running about 350+ fwhp.

There was some loud-mouth guy there and he was annoying as shit. He asked me what the Type-S put down stock, and then he was like "210, 210!! I guarantee it, 210!" (he didn't even know what it had from the factory at the crank :rolleye: ) He was pretty quiet after the dyno run, however.

The highest run of the day was done by a Supra at 418 rwhp, followed by my friend's S4 at 387 awhp and 430ish ft-lbs. Very impressive.

Dyno chart will be scanned and uploaded when I get back to school.

I ran 14.5@99 last season. Better suspension, wheels and tires, some engine upgrades and other stuff since then. It's been too hot lately to go to the track, so I'm gonna go in the fall. But I'm hoping to run low 14's or 14 flat and break 100 trap speed.

CORRECTION -- I misquoted the torque rating. It's 227, not 211.

Here's the dynograph.

I will be heading out to the dyno tonight. It will be my first time so does anyone have any tips. I don't know how easy or hard it is. The only mods I have are I/H/E for my '02 Type S. I know I won't pull numbers like Pure but I am curious to see what I do have. Any input that anyone has would be helpful...or if you people would like me to post a new thread I can. I don't want to steal Pure's thread for my question.

I don't care.

As this was my first time on the dyno, I didn't know what to do, either.

So here's what I learned.

1. If you have time, give your car some time to cool down once you get there. Then warm it up before the dyno run, until the engine temperature gauge is just at the normal operating temperature.

2. If you have center caps on your wheels, then take them off before you pull up to the dyno. The guys at the shop thanked me for taking them off before, because it saved them time. Then again, it was a dyno day with like 30 cars to dyno, so it might not matter in your case.

3. Turn off VSA, and put it in SportShift mode. You need to be in the gear that has a ratio closest to 1:1, which is the 3rd gear in our cars at 1.02:1. The final drive ratio, as seen in my dynograph, is 4.510. They will need these two numbers to get an accurate reading of the hp and tq ratings.

It might be a bit tricky to get into third gear, because it is also speed dependent. So tell them to keep revving in 2nd gear and keep trying to put it in 3rd using SportShift. Once it's in, let her rip. You will need to tell them all this, because most likely they won't let you do it yourself. They will be operating the dyno AND your car themselves.

Ask them to use the wideband oxygen sensor to get a reading of your air-fuel ratio, if it's not included. If it is, cool. If not, it's worth it for a small extra fee.

Other than that, they will be doing everything for ya. Sit back, relax and enjoy.

Yeah, your car should put down 195-205 fwhp. Good enough to match a stock Type-S.

My car has been through a lot, though. Unhooked fuel line vacuum hose (computer adding more fuel), numerous O2 sensor failures, etc, etc. Given equal conditions, your car should benefit more from the same mods than mine. Not to mention the Comptech headers are probably good for a few extra horses than my cracked OBX headers.

I'm confident that once I get the crack fixed, get an exhaust system (still running stock ) and get the V-AFC II tuned, she's good for 250-260 fwhp = 333-346 hp at the crank. DAMN our glass tranny and its massive drivetrain loss. If my car were a 6-speed, it would've put down 260 fwhp instead of 240. I'm crossing my fingers for the V6P transmission upgrade kit. It should reduce the drivetrain loss by a noticeable amount.

Great numbers PA!!! Looks like all the hard work is paying off. It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers you could produce with a tuned VAFC. I really need to get my car on a dyno sometime this summer. Your setup is quite similar to mine so I would imagine that the results would be similar.

That's what I said.

As for the track... that was a road course. Try it at the drag strip. And a stock 6-speed 3G would walk all over your car.

What's your best time at the drag strip?

Well, the run went okay. Unfortunately I did not have time to get back to this thread before I went so I went by what the guy running the machine told me. He said 4th gear was 1:1. So I understand that I should just get it into 3rd and once I do that I can just get on it?? Do I have to be at a certain RPM to get better results? I will be doing some more research on this but thanks for the info. I will be going back for another run in a week or so. Oh yeah, my best #'s out of the 2 runs:
Max Power=200.2
Max Torque=176.4
Temp was 89 and humidty was 81%. Also the guy didn't have a fan to keep the engine cool. Kind of a hole in the wall place but the guy was real nice and it is the only place close by...rather than driving 2 hours to another one.
I am hoping for better #'s next time knowing what I know now. Thanks again.

Well, it doesn't really matter as long as the proper gear ratio was used.

Is yours a Premium or a Type-S? Mods?

It's an '02 Type-S with AEM CAI and Comptech H/E. I will be going in for another run in a couple weeks to see if I can do better.

One question, what octane are you on? Here in California we only have 91 which i think greatly reduces the potential of the motor

anything before 3000rpm is not accurate since the tranny will not hold 3rd gear until after. your torque looks to be around 198ft/lb after vtec. nice numbers!

What do you mean it won't hold 3rd gear until after? It was in 3rd gear the whole time.

if you go WOT in 3rd before 3000rpm the car will down shift into 2nd even if it's SS mode.

So where on the dynograph did it shift into 3rd from 2nd? Because there was no shifting during the dyno run, and the speedometer went up to about 100 mph, and the peak horsepower occurred at 96 mph. It was in 3rd the whole time.

not trying to be a dick, but this is incorrect. if someone told you this then they were mistaken. i have dyno'd my car several times and i can tell you for a fact that the tranny never shifted to 2nd. also, when you're in SS you can plainly see what gear you're in. now it *is* true that when you're in 2nd and you floor it in SS that it can choose to downshift to 1st on it's own, you might have been thinking about that scenario. i've had that happen plenty of times, but it won't do it at any other gear.

239whp with I/H/E/P/S is impressive, although if it's true the dyno you were on reads high then i would assume around 230-235 is more like it. i know the dyno i was on (mustang dyno) reads low and i clocked in around 214whp which may be more like 220-225 in real life. knowing that the exhaust won't give alot of gains i would have to assume that the pulleys and spacer are the big difference. i didn't think you would see that much gain from those two mods but i will have to say i was wrong.

SSTS
No exhaust yet. I think I'm going with the Apex'i WS II. Just I/H/P/S for now.
