door lock knob question

OK, I am not a complete idiot, but . . . has anybody tried to replace their plastic door lock knobs. I took one out and now I am having problems getting it to "catch" the threads to put back on. Is there a trick to it or something?

I am having the same problem. I wanted to take mine out because I like to rest my arm there while driving. Now I can't get it all the way out and I can't get it to latch back on.

it's a self tapping screw. I got into the same problem before. all I did is to press down the lock tab and lower the screw inside door panel. the screw will center itself and insert the door knob inside (be careful not to drop inside the door panel), then flip the lock tab up; the screw will find its way into the knob hole. turn the know slowly and let the screw to find the knob's orginal thread. Do not rethread the knob, it will become loose.

BTW...these pictures are when it's UNLOCKED. When I lock it, only 1 of 2 lines show. These are made from brushed aluminum.

door lock knob question

I just had the same problem. I had to open the door panel and hold the lock in place with a screwdriver. The door panel is very easy to open. Start from the lower right and work your way up. The previous post seems easier but I did not have luck with trying to center the self tapping screw.

I had these custom made from an old member here (hhchon)....originally to lower the height of the knob so my elbows don't hit them (similar to a volkswagon). After we came up with the prototype (from a simple drawing of what I wanted my knob to look like), he decided it was a good idea and started selling them by volume to everyone else. I didn't want the look of cheap plastic...so we went with aluminum. Believe me, I looked all over trying to find knobs that were shorter, however they were either cheap looking, or the shape didn't fit right AFTER you lock it (including the stock ones).

jpadilla :
To each their own. It's unfortunate you'll probably never see them in person...however they blend in perfectly with the miscellaneous chrome/alunimum trimmings we have...especially with the black interior. I doubt this would ever look right in a tan interior. Plus I have a whole theme going on (aluminum pedals+shift knob+turn signal rings+interior badging).

Keep in mind all this was done for a reason...not just for aesthetics. I beleive the only mod I've done to my car that wasn't fuctional is the bodykit.

EDIT: and the turn signal rings.

there is a little trick..spin it backwards till it catches, then twist it on
it should work, it works for me (when plumbing!)

I did my door lock knob back in place. I had to take a flat head screw driver and remove the black plastic piece with the hole in it that door lock knob moves through.

I wanted desperately to switch out my knobs for the ones on the 2004 RL, which have gunmetal look to them, but when I asked at the dealership, all they wanted to sell me was the entire lock mechanism.
