Does a broken side mirror cover need full replacement?

Does a broken side mirror cover need full replacement?
I also cracked the COVER of my side mirror ('99 TL), but the mirror itself is still intact. Any idea if you can get replacement parts for JUST the cover and how much it'll cost? But i heard from a friend that since the TL's side mirror is electronic, the WHOLE thing must be replaced and that'll cost around 300-400. =S
