Do you have to use Honda Coolant?
Hello all I have an Acura TL-S 2002 and was just wondering do I have to the Honda Coolant? Can I use other brands? If you guys use other brands is there ones you can recommend? Also if I have to use the Honda one can I get some from AutoZone or do I have to go the dealership to get some? Thanks for any help guys.

Using the Honda coolant will put you on a higher ground of standing if your car has an otherwise warranty covered failure with part(s) connected to that fluid (water pump, radiator, etc.)
Unfortunatley a dealer is the only place you can get Honda coolant. Here's the real kicker, don't buy two gallons and think it's going to be enough, it won't be. Honda pre-mixes their coolant so there's no need to put in two gallons of coolant (or whatever it is) and the same amount of (distilled) water. Then they go asking (I think) $8.00 a gallon for it.
The only good thing is that you can go to either a Honda Dealer or and Acura Dealer to get it. Who knows, Honda dealers may even charge less than Acura dealers.

honda coolant in my opinion is the best coolant out htere. i put it in all my personal cars and families. they dont use a lot of the nonsense additives other brands use and i think its silicone free, in other words it keeps your coolant passages and jackets more clean

Your vehicle came with Honda's type 2 extended life coolant in it. The coolant is premixed and is not recommended for replacement until 100,000 miles if it is not contaminated with water. If you were to add standard coolant that is mixed 50/50 it will not damage anything but the coolant life span gets knocked down to 3yrs 30,000 miles. So it really would benefit you to take the trip to the dealer and pick up the correct coolant.

If my coolant level was low and I needed to add some to bring it up to MAX, would it be okay to open a brand new jug of coolant and store it somewhere until I need to use it again? What is the shelf life of Honda coolant after it is opened?

Shelf life of open coolant is many years. It does not absorb water like brake fluid and such. You can leave a half used jug on the shelf and use it next year ..no problem.

I would recommend getting the Honda coolant. It costs about $12 and can only get it at the dealer. Just buy one bottle and you can use it throughout the year. Twelve dollars for a year, isn't that much.
