DIY: VTEC Solenoid Valve Filter Gasket Replacement

DIY: VTEC Solenoid Valve Filter Gasket Replacement

Problem: Oil leaking from oil filter assembly (#12) from above the oil pan / oil filter, running down to the underside of the oil pan and dripping off of oil pan drain plug.

I confirmed with an inspection mirror that oil was not seeping from either the Oil Pressure Switch (#16), the Solenoid (#14), or the Vtec Switch (#17). Rather, the leak was isolated to the seal between the oil filter assembly (#12) and the Oil Pump Assembly (#1)

Tools/Parts:
1. 15825-P8A-A01 (FILTER ASSY., SPOOL VALVE - Item #13). Rubber gasket with integrated filter screen. $13 from the local Honda Dealer Parts dept.
2. Ratchet with two extensions (2" and 4")
3. 12mm socket
4. Small flat head screwdriver (to gently work new rubber gasket into position)
5. Small Pick (to remove old rubber gasket from assembly).
Time: About an hour

Steps:
1. With car up on ramps…
2. Remove Oil filter and let the oil from the filter assembly drain. No need to drain all the oil using the drain plug. Just removing the oil filter and letting the oil drain from here was enough. I had just recently changed the oil, so I didn't want to drain all the oil.
3. Remove three 12mm bolts from the oil filter assembly. This was a tight/awkward fit. I used the ratchet extensions and removed some clips from the inner wheel well splash guard to create some extra room for the ratchet to access the three 12mm bolts.
4. I left the solenoid (#14) and vtec switch (#17) attached/connected to the assembly during the entire procedure. If you have oil leaking from these (which seems to be a common problem, you'll want to switch out the gaskets, o-rings on these also).
5. While still under the car, I used a pick to remove the old gasket from the assembly. The rubber gasket was so brittle that it just broke apart in pieces as I removed it.
6. Installed the new gasket.
7. Inserted three 12mm bolts and tightened up.
8. Cleaned up all the oil from the outside of the oil filter and re-installed.

Hey Schmidt_t, thanks for the DIY tips on the V-tech solenoid valve's o-ring replacement.
Out of curiousity......how did the filter screen for the solenoid look ?

Thanks again !

The filter screen looked fine considering it was OE. No gunk, no blocks...just a worn out gasket.

Hey T-Ellie6, the procedure should be essentially the same on your 3rd Gen TL.
However, for best experienced info on this......check with the 3rd Gen forum !!!

I know this might be really old but are the 3 bolts holding the assembly the same length? Because I took mine apart and the top bolt is longer than the other 2, and on top of that, the same bolt(longer one) stripped the threads in the block.
