DIY: Installing Footwell Lighting

whats up guys. so ive looked around and although theres been many threads on led lighting throughout the car, there has yet to be one on footwell lighting. So i wanted to give back to the community after learning so much and receiving so much help from members here in such a short period of time.

thanks guys! this ones for you.

DIY

Difficulty - 2/10
Time - 1 hour
total cost - $50 (free for me since my buddy sells them)
materials - 16 gauge wire, electrical tape, scissors or wire strippers and cathode lights.

1. get supplies
2. decide where you want to wire it from. i had no choice but to wire it from my door light due to electrical problems. you can also wire it to a harness on the passenger fuse box. refer to picture with red circles

3. if you wire it to the harness, the blue/white wire is positive and the black/white wire is ground/// if you wire it to the door, blue/white is positive and other one is ground

4. remove light cover and bulb.

5. you do NOT have to remove your door panel to do this if you are wiring to the door. just simply pry the lower portions of the door panel open, reach in and grab the light plug out.

6. strip wiring then tap in the wiring from the new lights. remember, white/blue is positive. test that everything is good

7. run and tuck wires to your liking and your done! here's where i ran my line to inside the cabin.

finished product

in my opinion, it looks very nice and no where near rice. in fact, most luxury cars today have this option stock. i.e; mercedes, lexus, BMW...

btw, it turns on and off as the door opens and closes. lights turn on and off immediately and doesnt dim like the dome light.

feel free to ask questions, im ready to help.

Looks really clean.

Did you keep the door bulbs since you have these?

Dang...that is super clean, it should look especially nice if you have the whole interior done in white LEDs.

if you wire to the dome, can you add a switch on it to turn it on and off?

^ I think all you would need is a simple rocker switch between the positive wires.

Clean install BTW

The dome is only going to turn on when the dome light is on. If you want a switch, you need to hook up to something that has constant power.

Looks good. BUT please take the time to pull the door panel off and run the wire thru the rubber boot. It will be much cleaner looking.

Oh and those are the same lights i have for my trunk ( i have 4 total bulbs)

reason i chose the cathode over the LED strips is because the strips leave more "hotspots" and cathodes emit an even lighting throughout the whole area.

hotspots meaning some areas are brighter than others.

lol yup. pretty much common sense.

stick your head into your truck and look up where you see light emit from. remove the bulb and pull down the whole housing and tap wires. theres only 2 so process of elimination on that one takes 2 seconds. lol

good luck.

My LED strips in the trunk doesn't really have hot spots. It's pretty evenly distributed. But that might be because it's lighting a larger area.

Are the cathodes just as bright as the LED strips? I like how bright my LED strips are.

The cathodes will light up much brighter than the LEDs do.
