Question Dirty engine compartment

Hi everyone!

I live in the Houston area, and the for the past couple of days, we got some crazy ass rain.

Anyways, I have a REALLY dirty engine compartment now....muddy water spots on EVERYTHING. Any quick and easy suggestions to get it clean (spray it down with a hose)? I know Acura dealers offer engine compartment cleaning, but it costs like $100.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the advice tls260.

So, basically it's ok if all the other components (hoses, wires, etc.), since spraying down the engine would get everything else wet. Do I just use the simple green all over after the spray down, pop the hood open, and let the Houston sun bake the excess water off for a few minutes?

Could I use the same procedure for the sound insulation on the hood?

Just paranoid that there will be some small component that will get rusty or something.

Unless it's caked on mud, spraying down the whole engine is not needed.

First, take a vacuum and suck out any of the dust and dirt you can pick up. Then, take some Simple Green and spray it on a rag and wipe down the dirty areas. I use one of those dash vent detailing brushes to get into the tight spots.

spraying water in there just does not feel right. I think it would be better if you wiped it down like NSX said.

I agree with not spraying water in the enginer compartment. I had a 1995 Integra GSR which I cleaned the engine before I sold it. I thought I was careful, the car started OK and ran well for 20-50 miles, then it started missing and losing power, I took it to the dealer, they said water got int he spark plug recess. They blew it out with air and everything was OK. The weird part is the car ran OK before showing the symptoms. There are also more and more electronics on cars today..water and electronic stuff don't mix.

Smile Thanks for the tip!

I bought some of that Simple Green All purpose cleaner stuff from Wal-mart and sprayed it all over the engine compartment. After a few minutes, all the dirt just sort of disappeared! Almost no wiping! This is the best stuff I've ever used! I thought I would have to go through each nook and cranny with a toothbrush.

Now I'm gonna bust out the SG on my parents' I30.

Thanks very much for the tip, ya'll!

P.S. I don't know, but I think that stuff smells pretty good too.

I used to be a lifeguard at teh Gaithersburg, MD city pools. We unfortunately were required to clean bathrooms. Simple Green was our cleaner, and I will forever associate teh SG with cleaning bathrooms. :yack:
