Did you Know....

Hi
if you are driving in tiptronic mode second gear and you rev up the RPM around 6000 rev/min and keep it there four about 15 to 30 seconds, if that trigger the engine light to flash, that happened to me and i was just wondering if the flashing engine light is a reminder to shift to a higher gear.

Any comments ?

That doesn't sound like the smartest thing to do at all!

yes, if you try to rev high (> 6000 rpm) for a long time and the light will flash. your gear is controlled by electronic chip and will not allow you to rev over its limit, kind of a safeguard. you are not going any more fast when you are at high rev and should definitly shift up one gear.

15 to 30 seconds is a long time to be bouncing the revs off the limiter. The TL does NOT have a shift light and I don't think you should be using the engine light as a shift indicator. In short, BAD idea. The red area of your tachometer sort of means "Don't go there!". At the limit, the fuel is cut off, that's why it fluctuates because it goes back and forth on the limiter, meaning the computer does not want you to run the engine at that speed (revs).

I wouldn't do it again, 'coz it may f**k up the motor.

I had the same thing happen to me sometimes when my car hit the upper RPMs. It wasn't 15 seconds, but it was when i was flooring it in SS mode. Check engine light would flash a few times and then disappear.

Brought it over to the dealership and they tried to duplicate the problem. Somehow I wasn't too happy with the thought of two mechanics in my TL racing up and down the street trying to duplicate the problem, but after 30 mins and some of my gasoline, they found the check engine light flashing a couple times was due to several misfire codes.

Swapped the ECU and life has been good ever since....

/hope it helps

in other terms that's what has been happening to me too, when My RPM reached around 6000 and few seconds later my engine light started to flash, after few seconds it went away, my dealer has performed several checks on the car and they can't find where the problem is coming from.

Other members are misunderstanding what i mean by keeping your rev high, but what i wanted to know for the sake of it is IF YOU FLOOR YOUR CAR IN SPOTSHIFT MODE TILL ABOUT 6000 RPM DO YOU SEE YOUR ENGINE LIGHT FLASHING, CAUSE MINE DOES AND I WANT TO KNOW IF THIS IS NORMAL ON OTHER TL.

Thanks

Where did the 15-30 seconds come from? It takes much less time than that to reach redline in 2nd gear. It could also be your TCS light. Little yellow triangle. I am still confused.

running at that high rpm wont hurt the engine. mine has spent a good part of its life in those rpm ranges for extended time and never had that light come on

I thought if you neglected it it would safe gurad itself and shift up for you automatically - of course after it bounces off the rev limiter once or twice.

I have an 02 tl-s.

Nothing.

Sequential SportShift (Acura) Tiptronic (Porsche and Audi/ VW) Shiftronic (Hyndai, GM,etc..) Auto Stick (Chrysler) Touch shift (Benz), Steptronic (BMW) or whatever -Tronic somebody comes up with, are just nifty names for any automatic tranny with a gear selector that can make you row up and down gears. It's in sequence so 2-3-4-5 or 5-4-3 and you cannot skip gears like a manual tranny could. Beside the design of the shift gate, they are all the same, it allows you to go out of full auto mode and go up and down and hold gears. Kinda just a newfangled way of using Auto, that's all.

Despite this, it still does not behave or drive like a manual tranny, and many of the things that you could do with a MT (other than left foot braking) can't be done with the whatever-Tronic.

BMW's Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) or Audi's Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) on the other hand are newer kinds of MANUAL trannies designed to give you the option of an Auto Tranny. They are MTs without the clutch pedal and allows you to shift using steering wheel "paddles" a-la 360 Modena.
