Post Definitive Mid Muffler Info

Don't know about you, but I see way too many questions about the mid mufflers/resonator and their deletion. I also have questions, but don't want to get flamed for asking. I DON'T want the tin sound of a G35, but many have questions questions. If you have a catback setup, this doesn't quite apply being that your stock setup is already deleted.

List your exhaust mid muffler status

1. Mid pipe setup (which resonators removed)

2. Other exhaust mods (headers, mufflers)

3. Intake mods

4. Sound description

5. Droning?

6. Loud inside vehicle

7. want more or less out of it?

8. Other comments

1. Mid pipe setup: Both resonators still there

2. Other exhaust mods: Comptech Headers

3. Intake mods: Lower Resonator box removed

4. Sound description: Little nicer than stock due to headers, louder due to intake mod

5. Droning: None

6. Loud inside vehicle: Only hear the intake

7. want more or less out of it: Want a bit more depth

8. Other comments: Don't want the tin-like sound of the G-series exhaust.

Intake mods wont have any bearing on the sound of the exhaust.

Stock pipe, both resonators removed.

With stock mufflers very nice sounding on the same tone as G35, just not tinny.

with comptechs very nice sounding, just a louder version of the stock setup, but with drone inside the cabin.

With the comptechs and the quiet tip inserts nice sound droning much less.

With headers and stock mufflers slightly louder than before.

With the comptechs same as above.

All said and done it needs a little resonator to help with the drone. No matter what you do you wont hear it inside the car at full throttle (intake will be louder) without having interior drone.

If you do a search on some of the exhaust threads you will find sound clips, mine included. Dont ask what the drone sounds like or a sound clip as its very hard/near impossible to tape with accuracy and to hear over comp speakers.

1. Stage 3 exhaust mod (mid-muffler delete w/ Dynomax resonator replacement)

2. None

3. AEM CAI

4. IMO, the stage 3, without the CAI even, sounds alot like the hum of the Infiniti G series cars (which I personally like). But once the car warms up, it loses the hum.

5. Just the slightest "hint" of droning, when you're in a high gear at a low speed (i.e. 40mph in 6th gear) but this is true of ANY exhaust.

6. Mine is not loud, just a bit more throaty. People who don't know, don't even comment on it.

7. What I want is the GReddy Evo II

8. This is done strictly for sound purposes. If you want less of a difference, the stage 1 or 2 mod is another option. Stage 4 will be raspy, as that is the equivalent of a straight pipe.

List your exhaust mid muffler status

1. Both Removed

2. XS Headers

3. Airbox Resonator Removed

4. Agressive, low humming sound when on idle due to the missing airbox resonator

5. None

6. pretty quiet inside.

7. fine with it

8. I did notice one thing though, when im in first gear an accelerating, i get a slight resonance from 1000-2000, but after that, its gone. I'll see how my car sounds after my 6mt swap is done.

comptech headers
stock intake (K&n insert)
stock piping, with resonator and mid-mufflers
mugen twin-loop mufflers

sounds like a muted g35 at idle and light throttle load
at WOT it's only slightly louder

but since one of my muffler's are cracked and unrepairable I'll be going back to stock mufflers soon enough..

1. Both exhaust resonators removed

2. XS headers (wrapped flex pipe w/ header wrap), Random Technology high flow cat

3. Custom CAI w/ K&N filter

4. Sounds great, except for the slight resonance from the XS headers

5. No droning

6. No

7. It could even have a louder growl.

8. If the resonance ends up bothering me enough, I will get a new flex pipe welded into place or just get new headers all together

I removed my resonator and put on mufflers. Since the TL-S has a very free-flowing exhaust system stock, i figured this would help the back-pressure and overall tone of the car. Heres a link to a sound clip.

I have an 03 tl-s and just got my injen intake system and just read about the exhaust mod. Did both res. cans last night and wow. I gave my buddy 50 to do it and sounds great. A little raspy. Not much but a little. A lot of growl though. Worth the money. Not ricey at all. Does sound pretty close to 350.

I think I'm gonna get this done soon. I'm sure with an intake and stoke exhaust it isn't gonna drone at all.
