Dealer tranny update: 163K miles....

I couldn't believe it, that at 163K miles Tischer Acura in Laurel, Md. said they will install a brand new second generation tranny and a new ECU and alternator (burned out too, not sure why) in my car for.......get this.....$1850!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really feel this is a great price, and that all this work done anywhere else could reasonably be expected to cost two or even three times that much. All I said last week was "please take care of me, I know I have alot of miles but I thought I could go farther, keep me happy and I'll stay with you guys forever". Never raised my voice or got ugly or demanding at all. Please realize that they COULD have said "You are way out of warranty, we can't help you".

Free obviously would have been better, but I have to say that $1850 is a great deal for a car so far out of warranty for tranny and alternator. I say, take it!

Damn 163K!!! You probably didn't even have a defective tranny, it broke becuase of the 163K on it. You're extremely lucky to be paying 1850 for it and not more.

Honda knows that their transmissions are total crap. They give all this great deals after warranty to make people feel happy and not complain a lot.

In this case, most likely Honda is picking up the bill (at least for trans and ECU) and it is Honda who you need to be thankful to in my opinion (if at all), not that particular dealership. The way I see it is that dealership is probably charging you just for the labor and if it is just a labor the price sounds pretty high. You did not even try to call Honda customer service and see what they have to say, did you? High mileage is relative and if people realize that Honda trans can last only 160K miles what would that mean for Honda? I would definitely talk to Honda and see what they have to say, because keep in mind the fact that Honda is very well known for covering the stuff way out of warranty and that is one big reason why Honda is what it is. Good luck!

He is getting a deal partly because warranty is 7yr/100K, he had it less than 7 years.... 160K highway miles should not cause transmission failure.
The only reason Honda is giving him a deal is because they KNOW their transmissions are crappy. Honda figured its better to settle this on an individual basis rather than having people spreading the word about crappy Honda transmissions. Once people get a "good deal" they become happy and don't spread a bad word as much.

In other words, manufacturer is standing behind its product. Which is one very important thing for reputation. Honda is very well aware that it is caused by manufacturers defect and in order to keep its reputation it covers it. Now, it is up to each and every individual to get as much coverage as possible because nobody is throwing money away just like that including Honda. The more you press them the more you are going to get, it may cost you some time but it will save you some big $ eventually.

there arent a whole lot of transmissions that make it to that millage (especially auto) gm has some of the best autos and they typically dont even make it that long.!

Did the extended warrenty apply to 00 TL? I remembered it was only on 01-03 models, and not all VIN numbes qualify. My last transmission on my toyota lasted around the same milage.
