Dealer installed '04 tranny in '03 TL
I rec'd a message from my friend (whose 71,000 mile '03 TL tranny died 2 weeks ago) saying that she got her car back today w/ the new tranny - along w/ a letter detailing her about them installing an '04 TL tranny in her '03... She may have missunderstood the letter, and I didn't get to talk directly to her to ask questions - so I'll find out more later. She also mentioned that she no longer feels the engine shift (she always did b4 - even when it was brand new) - it's extremely smooth now.
I left her a message to fax me the letter. As soon as I know more, I'll let you all know... this could be great news!!

Not to sound like a party pooper but we all know how well knowledgeable girls are when it comes to cars. I highly doubt that a dealer would install the 04 tranny into a 03 TL. If that was the case, then I would've ask for a 04 tranny too when my 99 TL tranny took a crap.

hmm.... I dont know about that, but if the dealer wanted to, they could install an 04 tranny in my 99... and if they feel so inclined, they could also do an engine swap for me too!!!

Don't see how that would work. The PCM is totally different on the '04 than in the '03 due to the drive-by-wire throttle system in the '04 that interupts the throttle during shifts to reduce wear.

Ok, finally rec'd the letter the Acura dealer left my friend. It says nothing about an '04 transmission. She said the dealer verbally said something about it. Of course, she knows nothing about cars, so I'll take her word for what it's worth. Nonetheless, here's the letter:
"The transmission that has been installed in your car has been redesigned and recalibrated for longer life.
Also, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) that controls engine management and transmission shift points has been updated.
The fuel pressure regulator may have been replaced, depending on the year and model of your car. The new regulator has been recalibrated to work with the PCM.
The changes that have been made will affect the way the transmission shifts.
Most changes will be transparent, but you may notice some differences. Some of these differences will minimize as the PCM maps your driving habits and tailors itself to your driving style.
The Acura division of American Honda has made these changes to insure the dependability of your transmission and to bolster your confidence in your Acura automobile for the years to come.
Should you have any further questions please feel free to contact your Service Advisor."
The changes she's noticed:
1. Faster and much, much smoother shift change
2. Slow start from a stop (she says it feels like the car has a hard time between 0 and 1 mph (?))

Now when I accelerate full throttle, there is a major pause between gears. The origional tranny was very smooth. The replacement sux.
What's interesting is my results are just the opposite of the results your friend is getting.
I guess it just depends on the luck of how good the tranny is that you happen to get.
Stupid ACURA. #%$#$@!!!
