Dead Tranny on an '02 TL-S

Goooood,
Two TL's, two dead tranny's...
First I had an '00 TL that when the tranny went it was just like everything was Neutral.
With the '02 I can only compare it to driving a stick when the clutch completely dies. It was like...hmm, say when it went to shift (either the tip shifting or in fully auto mode), it would take a good 10-15 seconds to switch gears...during which time if you have your foot on the gas it was like you were in neutral and your RPMs jumped up over 6k.
It sucked.

Here was the cool news...my dealer didn't have any loaner cars yesterday so they gave me an '04 TL (automatic) to drive until today when they get some loaners back in. That was pretty sweet of them (probably had a lot to do with my sales guy knowing I'm going to get the stick come late spring). Pretty good customer service (and probably good salesmanship too).

Anyway, just wanted to vent that.

Should I really get an '04 or should I just look beyond Acura?? Its frustrating that it's happened twice now. I know mechanics that work for garages that say they hate my car because they rarely get acura's in, they see plenty of Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Infinity, but rarely do they have Acura's come in with issues...

That's exactly what happened to my car. But your dealer treated you better than what my dealer did to me, I got stupid Saturn for a week while my car was in shop. I asked for loaner from dealer, but they told me that "Acura" insisted on giving customer a rental. I was pissed.

hould I really get an '04 or should I just look beyond Acura??
If I have $$, I would consider buying an another TL or BMW. But most likely I would go with new TL b/c of its value.

Get other car beside TL

I had the same tranny problem too. I got it back two weeks ago.
So far so good, but as soon as I pay off, I will trade to another car. I have not make any decision yet for s new car.

If I were you, I am not definetly getting TL again even 2004 TL.
Tranny fail is a very serious problem. I am sure 2004 TL has same tranny problem ( I hope not ).

Look elsewhere beside Acura.

I am on the same boat with the tranny. And as for the 04 even if you had the $$$ as for my experience I will never own a ACURA again...

Replaced two trannys on an 02 type-s..it seems they just replaced the first tranny with the same type.......when they did the second swap they put in a new type of tranny (so they say).......I am planning to sign contract on a new '04 this weekend......fingers crossed with the tranny........hopefully when I pull my trade-in '02 into the dealership...the tranny will die again just to put the screws to Acura America!!!!!

Why cross your fingers??? Just be finished with Acura and get something else! Going into a $35K purchase with serious doubts about reliability really STINKS......

I will never purchase another Acura or Honda.

I think you should strongly consider an '04 and get rid of your '02 like I did. The worst problem you hear on the 3G board is about the tires, and they can be switched. All the other problems discussed on the 3G board are minor. What a difference! No one has had an AT tranny issue, and there are some who now have more than 10k miles on their '04. OTOH, you should look seriously at some other brands before you decide to come back to Acura. You simply won't find the level of features for the same price.

My $0.02

Misery loves company.

This tranny thing is way out of hand. When is Acura planning to recall them?

The tranny's have been recalled. Keep in mind that not every TL owner is on this forum, I'm sure there are thousands of TL's out there with no tranny issues at all. Might just be the way we drive?? Either way, if I'm not mistaken, the '04 TL does NOT have a tranny issue. You can get a BMW or MB or Infinity but you'll just have to deal with their problems. Acura and Toyota has their tanny problem, I'm sure BMW and other companies have their own.
Personally I think Acura has done a great job in trying take care of whatever their problems are. I don't know why everyone is so upset with Acura. If you really hate it that much sell it and get a new car, you'll be a lot happier.
Just my $0.02!

I must have missed that letter. My 2002 TL-S wasn't called in for a new tranny!!! Mine was replaced after the stupid thing failed.

Interesting. My wife drives the kids around town in my TL-S and I drive it on trips. How exactly SHOULD you drive a car??

Failing transmissions is NOT a minor squeak or rattle that other cars have. It's a major problem that will cost us big bucks once the warranty runs out. Who knows if the '04's will have this problem or not? Give 'em time.

Because for $32K you'd expect a transmission to last longer than 40K miles.

Longer then 40k miles.........I drive this car for business....I am 30 years old...I don't drive around like a nut. I have replaced a tranny at 25K and at 55K. I just reached 72K, I am expecting any day for the thing to stop working....... I agree Acura service has handled this well.....But I am not part of Acura's R&D team........If they put a tranny on the market without proper research and development it is there problem....I think I should be compensated for my tranny problems with my new purchase ('04 TL). Hell, if I am going to work for Acura R&D they should pay me!!!!!!!!!
