A day before inspection headlight blows out

So Im set to take my car to get inspected in the morning, and tonight I see that my headlight driver side goes on me.

1. Can I get a replacement at the dealer or pepboys

2. How much will they run?

I need to get these replaced before I obviously go through inspection

It's kinda hard witrh headlights...HIDs are nice, but they are PITA to figure out why they are out. Of course you would think that it's just the bulb (and it may be) but it could also be the ballast or a couple other things. I would switch bulbs from one side to the other to see if the problem stays with the bulb. That will tell you if you need to replace the bulb or keep on trying to figure out what the problem is. There are places online where you can get them for a good price, and it's only the 16th, you've got some time.

I would try switching them, then if it is the bulb, but I don't think that local parts stores stock those bulbs. I checked autozone.com and partsamerica.com and didn't see them on there. All I saw was the high beam.

these are special HID bulbs D2R bulbs- handle with latex/rubber gloves
- dealer 135 each, ebay 85 pair- or azine vendor excelerate 140 pair for killer Kaixen xenon 6000Ks
I can see better at night now than any car I have driven- and thats a lot of cars!
Call or pm Josh if you are near CT.
he has 5000s as well but I am very happy with the white-blue of the 6ks

update:
took car to the dealer, he says its not as easy as just the headlight. There was some moisture in the headlight he says that caused the problem, and i have to replace the headlight assembly, bulb, and control unit. total he quoted with parts and labor is over 750.00! Is this normal pricing? I dont wanna drive around with 1 light out for days on end, but I wasnt expecting that either.

Save yourself some money and go aftermarket on the headlight assemblies, and bulbs.

You don't need to buy a new assembly...more than likely. You can pull that one out and put some more silicone around the assembly to seal it better. Unless it is damaged, there should be no reason for a new headlight assembly. Are they certain it's the bulb? Don't let them rip you off. They will probably try to get over on you if they can. And if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, you can do this yourself. No need to pay almost $80 and hr for them to do the work.

Okay...I need to clarify now. Did the tell you the headlight assembly or the ballast. What you have in the pic is the ballast. If that is the problem, you can also bake it (do a search for instructions on how to do it) and that may fix the problem. More than likely, if it is the ballast, then you don't need new bulbs. That's why I recommended switching the bulbs to see if it was the bulb or not.

When you look at the headlight is there mass quantities of water droplets on the inside
That will cause not only bulb failure- but take out the ballast as well

Always try the bulb swap before going futher
And try the auto recyling yard for a ballast
or ebay- I got my new blacked out housings there- work perf- no leaks $225 to my door
