Post custom gauges - I'm the giunea pig - help

A friend let me borrow his TL gauges (he has CLS gagues). I'm sending them out tomorrow to have custom gauges made. If they do a good job SnooK will start carrying them on this site.

My problem is how do a get the f*cking needles off the gauges so I can send them out?? Acura says they don't know because if a gauge goes bad they replace the whole thing.

I'm going to try and heat the needle with a blow dryer and see if I can get it off that way... if I do get the bastard off do you think I can put it back on when they send me the new gauge faces and have it still work?

i think you don't need to take off the needles to get the gauge out. just slide it through. I have read some article somewhere about this ... your needles might be messed up if you do...

They are at home but I believe its a tiny little hole that the shaft sticks through with the needle attached to that... =Z

I had some NR gauge face plates on my old car, and you had to turn the needle all the way to the right and then gently,GENTLY pull them off. If you break them, you have to buy a whole set of gauges. Maybe NR could help you. Just lie and say you bought gauge fces from them and you are trying to put them on.

My friend has white faces, and he had to carefully slide them on, with the needles all pointed a certain way.

I saw detailed instructions showing how to do this, but the site said best to just slide through so you don't have to recalibrate or worry about the spring when you put the needle back on.

Try: http://windsrprk.home.mindspring.com...o.html#indiglo

I once found better instructions, but you'll just have to search...

Hey Nate: when removing the gauges, you cannot remove the needle that connects the red needle to the cluster. If you pull the metal needle out you'll screw up the gauges and they wont read correctly.

Color choices for a white face are red, green, and blue. I want blue... sucks though because our needles are red.

There is no way to get the gauge face off without taking off the needle. Since the gauges aren't mine I'm not going to even try. I'm going to take it to a shop and see if they can do it... if not then the only way to get new gauge faces are overlays, CLS or TLS gauges.

This is crap. The needles don't come off. Acura won't touch it. Performance shops won't touch it. Theres no way to get custom gauges, and theres never going to be, unless you get them from the CLS or TLS.

Indiglo gauges are cheaply made, usually from Taiwan or China, and burn out within 6-12 months.

I'm pretty sure overlays would also require taking off the needle. But doesn't matter because no one makes them... I asked the custom guys at MMR and they said the don't do overlays.

From Acura-cl.com

1. they will fit over the gauges, dont even try to pull the needles, they dont come off. slide the gauge over the long part of hte needle the push the gauge under the base of the needle to get the over end over the back of the needle.
2. notice the brown plugs on the back of the instrument panel? PULL THE ONES DIRECTLY BEHIND THE 4 MAIN GAUGES, BUT NOT THE ONES AROUND THE OTHER INFORMATION. they are the light fixtures that light up the numbers on the factory gauges. you wont need these if you are installing indiglo gauges like i did. i didnt want to take a chance of having those lights visible through the new gauges.

3. (good one) instead of looking through dozens of pins on the top of the panel to find which controls the power and ground for the parking lights, simply plug the power and ground from the aftermarket gauges directly into the wire harness for the factory dimmer switch on the right of the steering wheel. ground goes to the black, and the power can go to either of the other 2 wires (3 wires total on dimmer).

4. (for dummies) and dont paint your needles! it weighs them down, thus resulting in a few yellow pieces of paper on your desk saying "60 in a 35." in case you havent ripped apart your cl dash lately, everything on that dash works from electric signals, no speedometer cables. so you can move them and they will reset once plugged back into the dash.

HOPE THIS HELPS A LITTLE! email me with any questions you may have, i will be more than glad to help. i have a few hours of interior construction under my belt (88 mustang gt featured in AUTOSOUND & SECURITY, SEPT. 2000)

I think Accords top speed on the speedo is 145 and the redline is 6... and there are other differences (TCS, etc)... I have checked before and they won't work.
