Cruise Control Cam
Need a little guidance here.
About 6 months ago, I noticed that the cruise control wouldn't engageon my 00 TL. I posted a request for help here and received it. (The end of the cable had slipped off of the cam on/near the throttle body. I simply reattached it and off I went.)
I noticed recently that the cruise control wouldn't engage. "A-ha", I thought, "I know how to fix this".
Not so this time. It appears the small area in the cam where the end of the cable attaches has a piece broken off and therefore the end of the cable won't stay seated.
My question: Is it possible to just buy the plastic cam and replace it, or am I looking at an entire assembly?
It doesn't appear that difficult to replace (or am I being naive?).
I'm getting rid of the car because of the ongoing tranny woes [3 by 92,000 miles], but don't want to have this cruise control come up as an issue on the sale/trade.
As always, your help is appreciated.

I just lost my cruise control yesterday and found that the piece where the cable attaches is broken, why the hell did they make this out of plastic? Makes no sense at all. I wrapped a short piece of wire around the end which holds it in place fairly tightly for now anyway

Am I in the same boat as you guys?
I turn on the master cruise control button on the left site of the steering wheel.
I driving about 70 and I hit the Set button in the steering wheel, green Cruise control light goes on in the dash for about 2 seconds and turns off.
Whats up with that, anyone know?

I thought that's how cruise control worked?
I turn on the master switch, hit set on the steering wheel and the green Cruise control in the dash comes up for 2 seconds and comes off, but the car doesn't maintain its speed.
Anyone got a clue? Thanks
Yep, that's how it's supposed to work, but you said your green cruise light stays on for only 2 seconds then goes off by itself, which it shouldn't do. When my cable popped off the cam, the cruise light would stay on even though the cruise control wouldn't maintain the vehicle's speed.
Did you check the cam/cable to see if maybe that is your problem?

The same thing happened to my '01 TL recently. The cruise control stopped working. At first I thought the cable was getting caught on the cable sleeve near the cruise control box. But I took it to a dealer and they found the same piece that Vectorczar and Docrob describe above was broken.
No one answered vectorczar's question. I found a junked TL and I have the option of taking that cam off the throttle body on that junked car. I will save about $300 if I do that ($100 vs. $400).
Is it worth it on a 92,000 mile TL or should I just get a whole new throttle body through Honda? Is it dangerous to get a used part for the throttle body?

I would make sure that the plate rotates freely, and nothing is broken on the mechanism. Then swap the MAP sensor from the old one to the "new" one (if it doesn't come with one), and cross your fingers that the idle air control valve on the "new" one is still good. As far as I know, the IACV isn't interchangeable so if it's bad, you have to get a whole new TB housing.
I actually just told the dealership to order a new TB. I don't have the experience or the time right now to change out the cam myself, so I need professional help. The dealership said I would have to bring in the junked part, and then they would evaluate if they could install it. So basically, I would have to spend $100 and then hope that the dealership would install it. Another detail I didn't mention is that I have had trouble with the throttle sticking open (probably because it's dirty).
With these factors combined, I am captain planet... I mean I decided to go with a new TB.

Got the new TB today @ Acura of Ocean, NJ. $545 ($360 TB, $150 labor, $remainder tax). The technician confirmed that my TB butterfly was, in fact, dirty as hell. That was probably what caused the throttle to stick. I drove around a bit today - cruise control and throttle work great. I'm happy with the investment, but I admit if I had more time and this wasn't my only car I'm sure I would have tried to install that junked cam myself and then clean the TB.
