Crank Pully tool for ten bucks at Home Depot

Finally got around to the timing belt project. After doing some research I found a home made crank pully tool some guy made up but it required welding. I don't have a welder so this is what I came up with.

Any place that sells black pipe and fittings(home depot, lowes) should have this stuff.

1-1/2" to 1-1/4" reducer ---- this is the part with the nut.
1-1/2" tee
1-1/2" to 3/4" nipple
24" length of 3/4" black pipe ---- I probably could have gotten away with a shorter length.

The beuty of this is no drilling or welding. The only machining involved was to file off some of the galvy on each side of the hex nut. I actually used a belt sander which took me about 1 minute to do. Next step screw the parts together REALLY tight. I used a pipe wrench with a 6ft breaker bar.

Anyhow, The project took me about 6hrs.

replaced:
timing belt
p/s belt
alt/ac belt
timing belt tensioner
alt/ac belt tensioner
water pump
coolant(honda type2)
Skin on my knuckles

Thanks for the detailed parts list! Nice work!

Having never changed a timing belt, how is that tool used?

Very nice creative tool. that piece of wood is a good idea.

How hard did it take you to remove the crank bolt?

I did essentially the same thing but had access to a welder, very good ingenuity.

It was VERY tight. I used a 6ft breaker bar. I thought I was going to bend my 1/2" extensions. I probably had a 45deg flex before the bolt broke free

Wow. 45 degree flex. I would have been cringing. Probably a good time to wear safety goggles in case it broke apart explosively.

This post should be a sticky. Great stuff.

According to the directions for installing a lightweight crank pulley- the torque on that bolt is 181 foot pounds!!!

Sure is, that is true of all Honda vehicles, at least the axel nuts are only 120ish.
