could this be my tranny failure?
i have 02 tls, 210k miles. my engine light is lit up, every time i started the engine and shift to drive there is a delay, drive for ~ 5 mins and the gear would disengage and the rpm will rev up, i then pull over and shut off the engine for a few minute then it will allow me to go for another 5 minutes. could this be sign of tranny failure? if so how much do you pay for to replace the tranny?
thank you so much for any advice in advance,.

Sure sounds like it. Sounds like you have clutch material that is clogging up the passage ways in the trans. When you stop and let it sit a while things settle down and pressure drops until you start going again and pressure builds. How does the fluid look? You can try to do some fluid changes and a filter change and see what happens. The solenoid screens are probably clogged as well and you can try cleaning them. Likely too late though. If so search for the AV6 swap thread as a solid replacement

The typical trans failure is where you cannot get out of 2nd.. 1st to 2nd should work fine but will never go to 3rd.
What your describing is if you let your trans go very dirty with long ATF changes and clogs the Solenoids making even 1st hard to engage.
In any case yeah your trans is fucked.

Honda or acura dealer for the dw-1 fluid
OR ck a smaller Import Car Parts type shop, The one by me has a surprising selection of Honda fluids and redline and royal purple yadayada
Certainly worth a look in the phone book and a few phone calls!

if you want confirmation on the clutch friction plates failure= crud getting into fluid:
take a 3 ounce sample of the fluid from drain point
Send to Blackstone Labs with 20 dollars for a mass spectrograph analysis
ck their website for details
Usually when the clutches disintegrate to a point where the torque convertors' outlet screens clog (then work after resting) it happens while driving, but if its been a long time coming failure, anything is possible
do you ever change the atf? did you know it was supposed to be changed?!
is it reddish and smells like atf, or brown to black and smells like burnt toast?
There is a reason we call failed trans parts `toasted`
On replacement: a solid find was made = a used (from junkyard/auto recycler) Accord from certain years trans drops right in , or with minimal swapping of sensors and a bolt hole must be drilled iirc
Any good trans shop can get the job out in half a day!
Cost: trans $500-750 and 500-700 labor for the swap, so 1500 for a trans that is way better design and will last you no problem!
using a TL trans results in the same wear problem we have now
Just be sure it gets a Honda DW-1 atf in it!

If you can get it to a parts store- they will happily ck the codes for you FREE!
A CEL light means something is wrong, the computer doesn't always know exactly what- but will throw codes to get your attention,
From those codes we can narrow down whats happened
Example- ecu may think there was an engine over-rev, but it was your trans slipping that caused the bad info (that happened years ago to my 01 at trans failure)

69tl you need to go and buy a pressure gauge with a M6x1.0 thread end.
Next you need to locate the line pressure port on the trans, remove the 10mm bolt and install the pressure gauge.
Start the car, make sure the line pressure port is not leaking.
Keep car in park and idle speed.
Check line pressure at the gauge after car is started, again at 5 mins, then again in 10 mins.
The gauge should read 130-140 psi all the time which is normal pressure. Service limit is 120psi.
If you go lower than that you have a clogged internal filter which means the trans is toast. Too much debris in the trans from clutch material is floating around.
In this picture it shows the pressure specs for the line pressure port.
In the second picture you will find the location of the line pressure port which is where the pressure gauge gets installed.

to change the atf go to a Honda or acura dealer or import car parts store
buy Honda DW-1 atf
the drain is several inches over from the engine oil drain plug and says ATF above it
Insert the square drive end of a 3/8" breaker bar or ratchet and turn the drain plug LEFT to loosen
remove drain plug
On top of trans is a large bolt with ATF stamped on it, remove that- its the filler hole
Some cars may have the old 2nd gear recall installed oil jet kit- that has 1 small bolt holding its mount to the trans- unbolt and pull straight up
You can use the dipstick for trans to refill - it just takes a while, that's if you cant get the filler plug off
trans will only drain 3 to 3.5 qts of its total 7.3, you refill and drive a very short distance using each gear up and down 2 times
Drain and other 3 qts, refill
Depending on the fluids condition, decent or was very ugly= you can do a 3rd time drain and refill or drive a few weeks to gently introduce the new fluid and its many cleaners then do another change.
A new external oil filter is wise!!
see owner manual or any of the DIY or main area threads on the subject for more tips on dealing with stuck drain plugs and more

its better than the old days when we had to loosen a bunch of bolts on a pan and hot fluid spilled everywhere, why would they put a simple drain plug there???
then finally get to a filter screen to replace
On the TL the filter is external- only slightly hidden on top-side of trans and spins on like an engine oil filter

I should have looked it up before I posted because I use so many adapters. So ignore the original adapter size I posted.
What you need:
1. Any pressure gauge with 1/8" National Pipe Thread end.
2. M8 x 1.25 adapter
This is what I bought on Amazon, you can buy the same pressure gauge or any kind you prefer but you must buy this specific size adapter which allows the pressure gauge to fit in the test ports.
