COSTCO Gas Causing O2 Codes ?

Anyone experienced any issues using Costco regular gas ?

I had a couple of codes for a Bank 2 O2 Sensor fault which has not come back in about 3 months. I remember at the time, the car idled funny and stalled a few times then immediately threw a code. Even after I soft cleared the code, it came back within a few miles. Looking back, the only thing I did differently around that time was buy a few tanks of gas from Costco.

I thought that the sensor had gone bad but it has not come back and I have not used Costco gas since that time.

Anyone else had similar issues ?

I've been using Costco gas ever since I bought my TL-S in 2006. No problems ever with the 92 octane gas. Why are you using regular?

start with costco is buying in bulk, may not be anything beyond the govt required amounts of cleaner added to it and the lowest allowable flammabilty etc

run 91 or higher,,its too easy to use the correct gas for the car--
its really made to run on 94 octane!!-especially type S engines with higher compression

may also need a good internal cleaning with any of the well known products~

Have you cleaned the EGR port system? that causes funny probs and might generate false codes,,needed every 75kmiles

Whats a soft clear of codes? most of us pull the clock fuse and force a master ecu reset

Their gas is always cheaper and I suspect it's because it has a higher percentage of ethanol which may have produced sub-87 octane fuel, causing the poor idling and funny O2 readings.

I have a un-modded 1999 and I've run 87 octane for the past 8 years with no issues as many others on this site.

See my own posts regarding EGR cleaning. I'm the EGR champ of all time !!

Soft clear is when you use a code reader to reset the codes and hard clear is removing the power to the ECU. The difference is many of the engine run parameters are "learned" using inputs from other sensors, which are not reset with the code reader, it simply clears codes.

I don't have any issues right now and the CEL has remained off. I just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this.

until you pull the motor apart you cant say the 87 was fine to run

-your 99 has lower compression than a later type S, so not affected as much

I put down whatever possibles I can come up with- regardless of your past post-
so that others may be able to put together in diagnosing their own problem

8 yrs. should be plenty long enough to determine if anything was going to happen. There's bound to be some deposits in there anyway after that long.

Where are you getting that info? Can you cite your source? I'm not doubting it, but it kind of bothers me that AZ only offers 91. Stupid altitude.

Not being a troll, but I have run 87 octane since I bought our '99...since October of '98. 166K miles.

I think Smartypants is Smart.

Its 91 octane not 94. 91 is the min for premium.

And what is the benefit from running 87 over 91?

a 99 with 9 to 1 compression can get away with 87 as long as you dont push the car hard.
The ecu retards the timing to compensate for the fuel trying to ignite BEFORE before the piston reaches TDC!!

part of octane rating is the ability to control its ignition/flash point

type S needs 91, and yes 91 is the min spec to be called Premium gas,
with 93 and 94 in some parts of the country
I dont have an honest answer on why/where for that- guessing altitude

the TL-S motor with 11-1 compression, is made for 94 and will compensate for 91 without big issues

found some great pics of pistons that were not cared for~ carbon city!!

low octane can cause other probs from the compensating being done to make it run

87 users: run a can of seafoam in half a tank, then the next 2 months run premium
Notice less pinging and better hill climbing ability etc

My 99 has issues with anything lower then the "rated" ron. Premium 92
Most gas here in northern NJ is chock full of alcohol anyway so stabiliser is the biggest issue.
For the 2 dollars across a tank fill up it is worth paying for "premium"

ping ping ping

yes, absolutely every time I use Costco gasoline in my 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser I get an error code saying that my bank 2 sensor 2 puts out a P0176 error code. If I mix Costco gas with other gas, I still get the air less frequently, but it does happen. If I run all of the Costco gas out fill it with Kroger gasoline it will go no problem without any failures it made absolutely no sense to me. I don’t understand it, but that’s what happens to me and then just recently another gas station and I can’t remember the name of it in Missouri within 10 minutes of filling up with that gasoline the error code came up.
