Cost of transmission replacement

For those of you who have taken your TLs to the stealership for transmission replacements or quotes, how much did they want to charge you? The local dealership wants $6200 to replace the transmission in my mother's TL.

Its a 2000 with 116k on it she bought it used and there was an invoice from a previous dealer in the glove box showing transmission work at roughly 45k.

The transmission went quick monday morning she complained that it shifted roughly a couple of time and then the CEL came on. I pulled the p0470 code and started researching it. Meanwhile, she went to run a couple of errands and made it about 5 miles before it completely crapped out.

We have a call in to Acura of North America and they will hopefully get back to us tommorow. I just get the feeling the dealership is inflating the price and once we hear from Acura they will reduce it and act as if they are giving us a deal.

I agree- a different dealer with a sence of decency

the thing at 45 was the oil jet install- a recall- everyone had it done free

at 116 there should no problem do a goodwill of 500-1000 dollars on your part
Unless there is something else the car needs, like all new brakes and suspension and that was added to the estimate...someone is high

7years plus 9 months from date of first sale or 109k miles whichever first
Some VINs get court case `odometer error` bonus miles to 114.5 indicated miles

Call acura care and register as owner 1-800-382-2238 x5- ask the date of sale and if the `oil jet install recall` was performed
register here too
http://owners.acura.com/registration...erstepone.aspx
need cars vin for both of those

the warranty replacement trans done in or after 2005, have a new case design that puts the external oil jet kit INSIDE the trans where it belongs

Read the last 10 or 20 pages of the Tranny Failure Thread for specific details on how to request goodwill coverage. How you go about requesting coverage can make a big difference on how much you end up paying.

Here's a link to the Tranny Failure Thread:

I read through the first 5-6 pages and the last 5-6 pages when this happened. Unfortunately the Acura rep got back to her today and it sounds like they are giving her the runaround. They told her they cant do much because the car is 2,000 miles out of warranty, and because she hasn't had the work/maintenance done at the Acura dealership. They told her the best they could do was $4600 which seems high anyway. The best part is she has had the work done at the Honda dealer because its closer and they're cheaper. Acura is really starting to piss me off with this whole ordeal.

Is she talking to the "Service Manager" at the dealership? That can be important.

And, for what's it's worth, Acura installed a new transmission in my 1999 TL for about $3,200. (That was paid for by the previous owner.) And that was without any goodwill assistance. So $6,200 sounds insane. Do you have another dealer you could take it to?

Well it wont let me edit, so here is an update:

Acura won't budge they insist the best they can do is $4600 because the car is 2,000 miles out of warranty. This is after dealing with the Acura rep, the local district acura person, and the service manager. Apparently the service manager never talked to anyone to get his whole "Acura will cover part of it down to $4600" but now the district rep and the rep of acura of north america all say they wont do crap. So essentially they will give her a "deal" at $4600. This reminds me of why I am a Nissan fan through and through and I am glad I never bought a TL because this is just craziness. Their solution is they will give her $2k for the car salvage and she can trade it on a new one. My family has owned Hondas since they were first introduced but I for one will never go near them again.

You might want to check with local transmission shops to see if you can get a lower cost repair.

Good luck!

My transmission just went out a few days ago. Acura Dealership estimated $4,750 for transmission alone. I found a local shop that could do it for roughly $3,000 including replacing two motor mounts. Good?

A 2000 would also need an updated ECU, which adds another $1,000+ to the bill.

The reman transmission usually costs $2500 plus 8 hours labor at $120/hr (or more). Add in two motor mounts and possibly lower ball joints (common), and you could easily be over $5500.

A Nissan fan? I have owned Nissan's most my life, and will tell you they will stick it to you. They have never given me any good will offers, or any favors on any of my cars, family cars, or anyone I know other than screwing them. They are way worse than Acura/Honda.

I was told 4100 from a dealer in baltimore and another 1000 for pcm. Mine is an 03 so not sure if all need a pcm. Also if you call the number somebody quoted above x 5 and be nice and dont take no for an answer you can start a case and they will assign you a number and case manager. May be able to get good will. I have called a few times myself and i get further each time. Finally the case manager is calling the service manager. So be persistant and it may pay off. keep your cool though.

My 02 TL-S had around 155k on the odometer when the tranny started going bad. I tried and tried with Acura Customer Care to get help but to no avail.

My local Acura dealer (Park Acura, Akron, OH) helped me out a little with an Acura refurbished tranny installed for $2800.00

This repair comes with a 3 year 36k mile warranty that is not transferrable.

When my trans failed I talked to one of the service managers and they contacted Acura on my behalf. This was last February. I had 121,xxx miles on my 2000 TL so it was out of warranty. The cost of a new transmission was around $3800 and Acura goodwilled $3200 of the cost. So my out of pocket was around $600. They come with a 3 yr or 36000 miles warranty.

I did have a lot of service work done there and I did my oil changes there when they used to be price competitive with Jiffy Lube. So the service staff knew me.

So try contacting the service manager and see if they can help you. Best of luck!
