Coolant flush

Been researching flushing the coolant system and found 2 ways to do it:

1) Get a back flushing kit...Prestone makes one...in theory, it seems like it would work better and quicker, but you need to cut one of the hoses to put in garden hose attachment. Don't feel like mutilating my engine, plus I'd be running normal tap water through the system. We have hard water that totally sucks here.

2) Refill the empty system with water (from my purifier), idle the engine with the heat on, keep the radiator cap off and add water as necessary until the fan comes on twice...wait for it to cool...and keep doing it until the water is clear.

The advice from Advance Auto Parts is to flush the antifreeze down the toilet...gee, thanks.

Anyhoo, which method would do the best job? If you've done it, a walk-thru would be excellent

Done it many times.

First flush it. Turn your ignition to III and put the A/C to 90 degrees, put the key back on I and take it out, leaving the heater on(heater coil open). There is a little white screw on the bottom of the radiator, opened and drain the coolant. There is another valve(bleeder) were you flush the coolant that is on the engine block. This is located near the VTEC module and oil filter on the engine block. It looks like the bleeders from the calipers. After you have flushed, close both screws(bleeders) then add tap(any)water, just water would do fine, no need for flush fluid. Fill it up to the top then turn the engine on, add water as needed. Let engine run for 10 to 15 minutes OR until the temp neddle reaches the half way mark. Flush again as it was explained on top. Then add ONLY Honda coolant, I would say about 1/2 a bottle if you live on hot or normal climate, for cold climates add entire bottle, the rest with as clean as possible water. Turn engine on and add water or coolant as necessary to fill up. Make sure to leave the A/C on 90(heater) during the entire process. You are done.

This sounds good, except I would not use tap water - some of it will stay in the engone, and disstiled water is cheap enough...

I don't know if the anti-freeze you get in Germany is different than ours, but the US Honda antifreeze is premixed. Add antifreeze only, no water.

i've been searching AW and AZ for a great set of directions to change out my coolant, so even though this thread is 4 years old, it happen to pop up a great time, since i plan to do this this weekend.... btw, does anyone have a picture of the valve on the block?
