Convincing to buy Navigation System I need some help
I am really into the gadgets, and reading about the navigation system I am now officially obsessed. My dad is getting a new 2002 TL Type S, very soon, but he hasnt decided with or without navigation. Can anyone list some reasons that I can use to help my cause. I really want the navigation system, but i dont think my dad will go for the extra 2k

If you only drive to and from work or school, forget it. But if you do a lot of driving, it is nice. I have used mine to detour around a traffic jam, and to find a Denny's in an area I was not familiar with. It is incredibly accurate and easy to use. If you can afford the extra 2K, go for it.

Disagree.
The TL's navigation system is by far the easiest to use. With detailed voice instruction.
If you try a laptop with GPS module, the result is not as great as I do currently has that setup with my 98 sienna. It's difficult for you to watch the laptop screen while driving. Laptop's screen needs to be in perfect angle in order to view correctly.

I got it and I weighed it heavily.
I use it more than I thought I would.
I even used it to find a friends address with the Map info feature. I scanned the area that he lived and when I thought I had it I tapped it in and the address popped right up on the screen. This was cool.
I also use it to explore which I like to do.
If you're not into gadgets and don't care about exploring I'd advise against it. It's going to depreciate faster than the car. This is technology that changes every day. The system we have will be obsolete in a few years and they'll make it much cheaper...

I just got the TL-S w/o the NAV system. I really wanted it, but all of my friends put some sense into me.
If you don't travel a lot, and you know your way around town. Don't get it. Save that $2K for something else. It would be cheaper to get a new cell phone with the web access where you can go to any map site and get the directions.
I agree that the NAV system is a kool feature and will impress a lot of people. But the bottom line is: its a luxury not a neccessity. If you have money to spend, go for it. If not, you'll survive without it.

I agree with Raptor. This had definitely been discussed before.
However, I will like to say that the Navi is a must (in my opinion), and I use it all the time. No more asking people for directions, consulting with my maps, or going on to Mapquest. Futhermore, it provides so many more features, and is much more than just a nice gadget.
The Navi is only an additional $2000, after paying over $30K for the car, that will pay for itself very quickly.
A lot of TL (and TL-S) owners who did not get the Navi, regret it, since it (the Acura Navi) cannot be added to the car after the fact. Forget about saving this money to buy a laptop, aftermarket GPS, or whatever. That's all a bunch of bull. That laptop will be obsolete in about one year (or less), and the aftermarket GPS systems do not even come close to the Acura TL-S's (which is made by Alpine).
Lastly, adding the additional $2000 to the financing or lease of a TL-S doesn't add that much to your monthly payment.

Also, I noticed about 4-5 cases (including my boss), who bought a car with the NAV and have gone in for their next car making sure that it has a NAV .....

I didn't get the Nav, and aside from one long trip I haven't missed it. It would have been useful when I was (way) outside familiar territory, but aside from that, it seems like an expensive toy.
There's one criticism I haven't seen discussed here: You have to use the screen to change fan speeds, while the rest of the HVAC controls are (sensibly) separate from the Nav system. What do owners think about this?

Before, I was too lazy to list the reasons to get nav. Now I want to. I drove to LA from Palm Springs yesterday for a seminar in a hotel near the airport. I probably don't need to describe the LA freeway system. The nav got me to and from the hotel like a charm.
Returning, I ran into a traffic jam due to an accident. The navi map was instrumental in getting me around the jam. Most of the time, it is an expensive toy, but yesterday, it was worth it. If you have the $$, definitely go for it!

My brother talked me into getting the Nav system on my Silver TL-S, and it was good advice. Several times now I've printed out a route to a specific unfamiliar location using MapQuest and found that it was not totally correct. Using the Nav System put me right at the entrance of the place I was trying to find, with absolutely no errors. Great piece of equipment if you're traveling in unfamiliar territory.
