Consumer reports say TL is 'da bomb
So after replacing your tranny for the 3rd time did you know you are driving one of the most reliable cars on the road?
"Ranking among the most reliable upscale sedans were the Lexus IS300 and the Acura TL."

Hmph. Must've been judging the 2001 models rather than 2002. Did they take into account the TL-S tranny failures? Likely not.
Still, my car has been extremely reliable and I continue to be happy with it.

Makes me wonder what the latest number is in tranny failures (percentage).

Well I do hope their results are true as I also have a TL. Nonetheless, it seems odd that the transmission problems seem to have had very little if any affect on their rating of the TL's reliablility. Given the fact that Honda has admitted to the problem, and that it is clearly evident on online forums such as this one...I found it hard not to make a sarcastic comment on consumer reports.
Also keep in mind that the tranmission is a major component, so it should definitely have some impact on the TL's rating.

My '01 AV6 with 64000km seems just fine with its original tranny. 64000km =40000mi?

Consumer Reports sucks, sadly. The way they collect information is flawed (they mailed out like 300,000 cards to subscribers about their cars and cars they know of to get the reliablity tests done), they are known to pander to their advertisers (so the people who advertise more, get a better rating).
I think the TL is a reliable car but I wouldn't read Consumer Reports to find that out... I'd pick up an Autoweek, C&D, or Road and Track to read bout it. It's generally a better idea to go to specialty magazines for products you wanna buy... There are even magazines and websites on VACUUMS! Don't read CR they are satan

Evidently you have not read a CR as they accept no advertising, unlike the magazine you quote which do accept advertising.

Actually the CR method of collecting data (I'm a member) usually overreports problems-people who are pissed off are more likely to fill out the form and mail it back.

CR reliability ratings
I've been a CR member for at least a dozen years. They accept no advertising. They purchase the products they test the same way we do (they walk into a store or dealership and haggle for the best price they can get without ever revealing that they work for CR).
The reliability ratings are actual reports by CR members like me (everyone who subscribes to their magazine) based on the items we actually own (not just that we've heard about).
If I recall correctly, an "above average" rating for reliability is given when less than 2.5% of reporting owners have had a serious problem with that particular component. Acura sells a lot of TL's and a lot of TL's have had transmission failures, but apparently it's less than 2.5% of the owners of TL's who are also members of CR.
A 2.5% transmission failure rate is much higher than it should be, but, overall, TL's are still much more reliable than the average car.
