Comptech Icebox ORDERED

Well, I made the plunge and purchased my first, authentic mod for the car

I ordered the Icebox from a local shop ($220 before tax), and it should be here either tomorrow or Thursday (I hope, now that I realize their may be a back-order). If it all comes in as planned, I'll be doing the installation this Saturday. Wish me luck, and please point me in the direction of any clear, concise installation intructions. I did a search, and it looked like one or two people were going to put up their instructions elsewhere, but it looks like it didn't quite happen ...

Damn, that's a good price.. but unless he had some in stock.. Comptech is still slowly catching up on backorders, so it may be more then 2 days....

Anyway, good choice. BTW asiankidd... someone on here replaced their AEM intake with the Icebox and it showed about 3hp and 5lb torque peak gain over the AEM... so it is better, although only by a very little bit....

Yeah, I was surprised at the price. After tax it came to $240.50 to be exact. I'm checking to see if they're expecting it tomorrow, or if there was a delay in the shipping ...

BTW, the main reason I chose the Icebox was that it was easier to access the air filter than other CAIs. Granted it doesn't look as cool, but I believe the performance numbers are the same, if not better. I'm sure it's a negligible difference either way, but the practical aspect of being able to clean the filter without taking the bumper off appealed to me most.

Well, the icebox is installed as of today (and no, I didn't install it -- I ponied up the cash for someone else to do it). Right now, the car is sitting in the garage with the battery terminals disconnected. Of course that means I'm resetting the ECU, so hopefully the onboard computer will "learn" with a clean slate. I punched the accelerator right after the install, and although everything sounds fairly close to stock, there is a rumble (in a good way) that wasn't there before. It's subtle but it's there, so anyone who thinks it sounds bone stock, I would beg to differ (unless my ears deceive me). I went into this thinking I wouldn't hear or feel anything, so in that sense, I don't think my expectations were high for what it's worth. Anyway, we'll see if I notice any difference in the responsiveness of the car.

I just got mine installed this morning. Took me about 2.5 hours to get it done. It was not that difficult. It just time consuming since you have to remove lots of stuff and put all of them back together.

The first impression on the test drive once I got it installed ... dang ... this is actually pulls harder now. Cool !!!

For the sound part ... for me it sounds just like stock before Vtec. Once the engine hits Vtec range, the sound of Vtec will be a little deepper now.

Overall, IMHO, the money is well spent. I just want to see if I could increase the MPG.

Cheers !!!

Congrats, drcookie. You're a better man than I for doing the install yourself You're right -- the car pulls harder, that is for sure. I also like the deeper growl, which again is subtle but noticeable. I feel it's great bang for the buck!

Is it nescessary to reset the ECU for the gains to be noticed? I've had mine in for about 2 months now and I never reset. Is it a moot point now?

From what I understand, the ECU is always adjusting itself, so in your case, it's already made the adjustments after 2 months. I reset mine right after the installation just so it would begin to adapt to the CAI immediately. I verified that the ECU was "relearning" by watching the orange "Malfunction Indicator Lamp" blink 5 times after it turns off (takes about 20 seconds with the key in the II position). Took about 2 days for the indicator to turn off as normal (instead of blink 5 times), which indicates the ECU has relearned its codes. Maybe someone else can better explain what exactly the ECU is doing, but the driver's manual says that the ECU is establishing its "Readiness Codes" which is part of the Emissions system.

I have to remove the battery during the installtion in which I believe actually reset the ECU. So far I have not noticed any improvement on the MPG.

I will wait for a month to see I would notice any different.

Cheers !!!

Local shop here in San Diego. They charged me $100 for the installation, though. I've read that others have gotten installation for about $60, so I probably ended up paying about the same after all was said and done.

Can you P.M. the name of the shop? I'm in San Diego every once in awhile (I live in L.A.).

Thanks.
