Question COMPTECH ICEBOX - any user reviews yet?

I've been contemplating getting the Icebox and feedback from anyone who's already installed one would be appreciated. I dont want to go with the AEM CAI because of the risk of water inflitration. The Icebox is way more expensive but appears to be a good solution IF its yielding decent performance results.

dont worry about water infiltration. It takes a lot for it to happen. and if it rains a lot in your area, just get a bypass valve. sorry, dont know anything aobut the performance of the icebox

They say that the ICEBOX pushes a bit more to the wheel. There is a dyno out there some where. try the cl forum....

Someone here had dyno result comparing stock, icebox and AEM CAI. The icebox and AEM were close in HP increase but the icebox was greater by 1HP. Do a search, you might find it.

well, that isn't a big difference 1HP..

Heard that the icebox sounds pretty much like stock...

not looking for a different engine sound. I would prefer it to be silent. Just interested in the drop in fit, OEM look, and waterproof design.

Any info on how the Icebox works since it does look like a stock airbox? What does the intake side look like?

its a cone filter inside the box. You will be close to 275hp at the crank with a new intake. If you want a stock sounding intake then icebox is the only way to go. Its supposedly really quiet.

if you want the quiet sleeperness, then get the icebox, but for sound i'd get the injen or aem. I have driven a cl-s with cai and a cl-s with icebox back to back and the one with the cai felt tourqier. The 2 cl's ran each other at 3 times off the line and the one with the cai pulled about a half a car each time out the hole. Both stock with just the intakes. But on the highway from a 50 roll they were neck and neck, whoever got the initial jump stayed where they were, no gaining at all.

If its just a cone filter, why isnt it just a drop in for the factory air cleaner box? Why do you have to replace the whole thing (and thereby increase the price so much?)

I love my icebox and it is pretty quiet until it hits 4500 rpms, then it sounds a little meaner. Not as mean sounding as the CAI but different then stock. under normal driving you can't hear it. I also have headers so my car does feel faster than stock. honestly though, the hp difference between the icebox and cai is minimal and you wouldn't be able to notice it.

The stock box is a huge mess! When my buddy and I did the icebox install there was so much stuff to take apart compared to the icebox. All the icebox really is is a short ram encased in a box keeping the engine heat away. underneath the box is a pipe that funnels air to the intake. The extension is not as low as a CAI so less likely to suck in water. hope that helps.

I just installed my icebox 2 days ago, and let me tell you it was worth every penny I paid for it. The power is definitely there and it has a nice growl to it once you hit the vtech range. Also, since the icebox is made by comptech you wont have any problem with warrenty issues. Just my 2 cents.

The icebox has more growl than haveing a stock set-up with the resonator removed, but not as much as AEM.

Do you have a Type S? My car is just a TL-P, which might get 8-9hp gain from Icebox (unconfirmed). I know the gain is greater on a Type S engine, so is it worth bothering to get for a TL-P?

Yes , I have a Type S. I think it still would be worth it to get the icebox. It may not be as much of a power increase as the Type S, but power is power and any amount is welcome. Also, I like having the comfort of knowing I wont hydro-lock my motor. But if it comes down to a money situation, it's all up to you.

I ordered it from this site and I got it for $250.00. It took a week and half to get because they were waiting on one piece to finish the icebox.

Thumbs up Comtech Icebox

I've had one installed on my 03 TL Type S for 3 months. No compaints. I've noticed a difference off the line and when I need to punch.

love my icebox... only about a 10% incr. in loudness when the windows are rolled down .. 0% increase in interior sound w/ them rolled up ..

power-wise ... don't know how to make that distinction since i had the headers and icebox installed at the same time... from what I've heard tho.. the midrange power is much improved... not super duper improved... but enough to justify the cash spent.

I have a TL-P and I love my Icebox. It's about a 10 HP increase and I can definately feel it . I was looking for something quiet, stock look and easy to clean. It doesn't exactly sound like stock....in the higher rpm's you can hear the great sounding engine....it sorta enhancing the already amazing sounds specially when the Vtec kicks in. I love it.

I know you guys oin otehr states are not affected, but in the Bay Area in CA, you are going to have SMOG Check II, which is much stricter and they dyno your car. I am afraid all these aftermarket might not pass visual inspection. Heard of anything in this area?

The icebox is carb certified, it comes with a sticker to be placed on it.
