Colder A/C

Is there anyway to get my air to blow colder? My girl has a CR-V and it blows cold as ice. Even my friend with a neon has colder air. I mean mine blows cool but nowhere near as cold as others. If I set it on auto at 72 degrees, it will never turn off full blast on hot days.

Have a shop do a a/c check and check on your freon level.

You may need a shot of freon and have you AC filter changed if you never had it changed before.

I've been noticing the same thing with my trips into hotter states... would you keep us posted on what you determine the cause to be?

My A/C does not blow as cold as I thought it should, be it, it still is 'cold' but works a lot harder on 95+ days then other cars.

On recent maintenance check I was told that my auxiliary AC fan was broken and that my AC will shut off when the engine needs extra cooling. Something to consider when your AC goes off during rush hour.

I've refilled the AC on my old car (chevy lumina). It was pretty simple, just went to autozone and got a refill kit. It came with about 30 something oz of refrigerant with leakstop, and a filler hose with a pressure gauge. Basically following the instrunctions i did in about 30 mins. It cost $40, much cheaper than doing to a shop. On the other hand if you have a serious leak, you'll be wasting $40 and going to the shop anyway to spend hundreds.

As far as your AC not going on full blast at 72 is because thats how its supposed to work. To get it to go on full blast either set it a lower temp or switch auto off. Check how cold ur AC is at full blast not at 72.

He is right about the temp. If you have it set for 72 and it's 80 out and 80 in the car, the a/c will come on slightly. The car manages the instide temp based on current inside temp, current outside temp, amount of light hitting the dash sensor and desired inside temp.

Verify that both condenser and evaporator coils are clean w/ relatively straight fins too so air flow is maximized.

Keep it set to 60 degrees. I found that the system uses the heating system to control the temp. Watch the hot water valve to your heater core open when you take the temp off 60.

For peace of mind, let the shop do it. Ive done it myselft before, it is simple thing, but it wont be effective, not to mention you could damage the system. If you are losing freon, you will lose it again after refilling yourself. The shop will drain the freon, recycle it, then refill it, and check pressure, then measure the cold temperature. It is worth it to let them do it. Freon is not like tires that you lose air in a few weeks and consider it as normal.

Agreed, the system doesn't 'slowly' leak over time. It either has a leak or it doesnt.

Make sure the compressor has enough oil in it, to much/little can damage the compressor, evacuate the refrigerant properly with a machine, the machine will get rid of any moisture or contaminants in the system, these things can cause a major problem, even if you do it yourself with the stuff you buy at parts stores, there will still be moisture and contaminants in the system. Fill the system with the right amount of refrigerant, as with the oil to much or to little will affect the performance of the system.

What often happens is failure to use the system in the winter and the rubber seals get dry -a little loss of freon occurs
Those with skills and training or a buddy with same, can easily check the pressure in the system and determine if a small amount- we are talking in the few ounces here- of freon is needed to top off the system.
Thats when you use the stuff with leak stop, leak finder dye, and synthetic conditioner- like slick 50 for ac compressors--its supposed to restore efficiency and drop temps 10 degrees.

Use of recirc all the time is many poeples problem with the ac
I set it on 68 in California hot summer and it cools the car appropriatley- any higher and it plays a game of deciding what temp to be at.
Try reading the owner manual for operating tips!!

Here a free one: When car has been parked and its hot inside- roll the front windows UP and the back windows Down- close the sunroof
Now turn the AC on cold full blast fan- turn to FRESH air so its bringing in new outside air to be cooled.
The low pressure created by the open rear windows as you drive will suck the hot air out and pull the cold air in from the ac vents.
Quickly cools things off- then switch to recirc air to keep all cold air in the cabin
Switch to fresh now and then to bring fresh air in again

Or you can pop the sunroof and the hot air leaves the car (hot air rises) and boom car is cold.

I'm an auto guy, just set the temp and let the darn car figure it out on it's own.

Tom - I hear you, anyting above 70/71 gets teh car all confused as to what to do.

I just got my car evacuated and refilled at pep boys for 89 dollars. They had a special posted that they forgot to remove so I got a free diagnostic. My Compressor wasn't kicking it because it was improperly oiled (my fault). But even after that it doesn't blow as cold as my bosses Honda pilot. I figure its just because he has a new car. And pep boys probably uses cheap stuff. It still cools pretty well. Changing your filter will also help airflow and cooling. I realized a couple of my cents were stuck shut because I put on the dash incorrectly when doing my LED's so that wasn't helping either

Aren't there some freon substitutes out there? Maybe that's what he meant.
