When my car is stopped and i step on the gas and let go the car moves and i hear a clunking sound from the front of the car

any idea what it might be?

When you step on the gas can you feel something shift then the car starts to go? If so, that's a motor mount.

could be brakes - my [aftermarket] pads made a clunking noise because they weren't an absolute exact fit - fairly common and didn't affect anything other than an annoying sound

could be aftermarket pads..
could be engine mount..

definitely not anything to do with the ABS system whatsover..

-check front engine mount..clunks..
-check brake pads, aftermarket or non-greased pads will move in the caliper holders and cause a clunk.
-swaybar endlinks and bushings, also check to see if the swaybar itself is actually -moving in and out of the bushings.. that will cause a clunk..
-check axel nuts, they must be very tight and staked to the axel..clunks
-if you've had the transmission done on your car, then check the front passanger side radius rod bushing, may be backwards or not tightened at all. will clunk..
-check power steering rack bolts..they must be tight. will clunk if the rack isnt secure
-check lower ball joints for excessive play..will clunk if the joint is dry
-check all subframe bolts. will clunk..

now you get an idea of what tech's go through everytime we get a customer with a "clunk" from the front end written on the work order!
