clearcoat coming off???

i have a 99TL used, and the strip of plastic under the front bumper, well, there seems to be paint coming off, or maybe it's the clearcoat
any suggestion of why this is happening??

ohh...that doesn't look good. I don't mean to insult you but did you try to clean the surface? Does it feel like there's a layer missing if you pass your fingertips over that area?

If what happened on my old 626 is any indication, that's the clearcoat that's coming off! And sorry to say, it's only going to get worse.

I would be proactive and have that section repainted and re-clearcoated.

becux i got the car used, i dunno if it was ever repainted, but the insurance center told me that the car had not have a claim, so my guess is it's not been in a major accident, luckily it's just the plastic strip under the bumper, not the metal parts nor the bumper

I would be suspicious of the bumper and other areas as well. It sounds to me like it has been repainted (not vey well) .

I would take your car to a body shop and have them inspect the car to see if it's ever been in an accident. Usually in a matter of minutes, they can visibly tell if the car has ever been repainted or rebuilt. Even if no insurance claims were filed for the car, it doesn't mean that it wasn't in an accident! If the car was in an accident and the damage was minor enough, the previous owner might have just spent their own money to get it fixed without telling the insurance company. Also, if the car was in an accident and another driver was at fault, that driver's insurance company might have handled a claim.

If it is just the bumper, the worst that could happen is that you replace it. It would be a lot worse if it was the clearcoat on any of the metal.

Casey
