cleaning OBX headers before install?

Hi ya'll,

I just got some OBX headers from dailod, and I noticed that the small pieces (the part with three tubes) have a lot of soot in them.

I'm must be in denial, but did he send me USED headers??? :wow:

If so, what should I do to clean them out before install?

I'm sure they'll get soot in them when I get them installed, but I want them to be clean at the beginning!

Thanks!

G

Who did you buy it from? Mine had soot in it when i bought them too...didn't know if they were used or not...but didn't really care. Don't think they were used becuase then the stainless steel color will turn yellow/orange.

I didn't bother cleaning it...the extremely hot gases will toast the soot off. The stock headers they removed where pretty clean inside.

~~~ Make sure you tell the installers to clean off the headers of any grease, oil,WD-40 before they turn on the car. My installers had something on it and when it gets hot, the headers changed color but there is stains/markings where the oil/grease was. Tried everything, metal polish, tarnish remover...had like 5 different chemicals...it does'nt come off.
CLEAN THAT $HIT OUT OF THERE!!!!!!look real close and there's metal flakes from the milling process.
you got some important stuff on your exhaust;ox sensor and cat. converter dont let that oily $hit burn up and flow through.
just my 2cent but better save than sorry.
BTW mine had the same residue on them
Definitely clean them before you install them. I rigged up a rag in between two strings and ran the rag the entire length of the pipes with detergent. There is dust, metal flakes, pipe bending compound, etc. in there which may do harm to your catalytic convertor or O2 sensor.
I would also recommend looking at boring out the openings where they meet up with the head. I believe that the smaller diameter openings are probably the cause of the harmonic problems that most people are having.
