Check Engine Light, Pleae Help.

Hey guys,

Well my battery died a couple of days ago because my alarm kept going off, so I had it boosted, but when I got inside again, my check engine light came on? Why did this happen?

So I took the car to the mechanic and he ran a check on the code, and it came back as some transmission problem...he cleared the problem and the check engine light went away. The car drives normally, no hard shifts etc.

He also told me this might have been caused by the battery dying, and to not worry about the transmission.

I'm worried sick my car is going to have problems, but he assured me that if the cars transmission had a fault that check engine light would come back...

Please help with any information.

Thanks.

best thing to do is go to autozone and they will chekc it for free..and if it's something wid ur tranny go to ur dealership and check on it a.s.a.p..its not worth ur car dying on the street like my car did...tranny crapped out...had the car budging all the way home..and its like 5miles away...i drove about 15-20mph and cars was honking the shit out of of me going home...

Seeing as how transmission problems are very widespread on our cars, it was kind of irresponsible on the mechanic's part to simply reset the code and send you out on the road again.

The transmission can fail at any moment, without warning. I wonder what the actual code was, but too late to find out now since he already deleted it. And for what it's worth, I've never heard of a dying battery triggering the OBD II system. But I suppose it's possible.

I guess as long as the transmission seems to be running fine and the light doesn't come on again, you should be alright.

I disagree,.. I've had a similar issue before. It's not too uncommon for a check engine light to come on after a boost. It can be a shock to a cars systems to jump the battery, especially if you don't do it right, and occasionally check engine lights come on as a false warning. (Actually what the light is indicating is that a sensor (your transmission in this case) recorded something and logged it into the fault history. It doesn't mean that it's a reoccuring problem, but just that something happened when the light originaly came on. It won't go out again until someone resets the light.) By the way,.. anyone with code reader can tell you what that light was even after it was reset. The mechanic doesn't delete the codes, just clears the alert code

Since you were not actually driving it when the light came on, I wouldn't worry about it for now. Your mechanic was right though,.. If if comes on again anytime soon, then take it into the shop immediately.

Thanks for all the reply guys,

And also Fuzzy mentioned shock to the car, well I accidentely reveresed the battery + and - and a small spark came, could this have been the culprit?

Also my car is running fine, no hard shifts etc.

Any additional input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
