If you don't wanna take it back to the dealer: First press both trip reset/A-B switches on the dash while turning on the ignition and hold them for about 30 sec's until the light goes out. I forget what page of the owner's manual it is on.

Check engine is a very serious problem. Take it to te dealer ASAP.
If you have OBDII scanner and you can figure out what the code, I can check HELMS maual for you and let you know what is the problem. Take it to the dealer asap.

I did, however, make an appt. for tomorrow because in addition my SRS light is on and that worries me a bit (Supplemental Restraing System, i.e. Airbags)

Disconnect the negative end of the battery for five minutes and then reattach. You may want to disconnect both for safety. This will cause the ecu to reset and understand changes.

My engine light also came on when the radiator broke and the engine overheated. cost me over $2k to fixed. It was my fault and not the car.
so don't take chances with the engine light, but I can't argue that most of the time is just a let you know something is not working 100%.

OK i just had my 2000 TL up to the dealership because the SRS light was on. i looked at the invoice after they were done. the service guy told me that there was a defect in the passenger seatbelt buckle that was causing the light to come on. all that meant was that in a crash none of the airbags would go off. He told me that it was normal and that they had seen a lot of the 2000 TL's with this. just thought i'd throw in my $.02

Check Engine light on
Regarding "Check Engine light" Unscrew gas cap and put it back on making sure you click it a few clicks. I took delivery of my 2001 Tl and the light was on. I figured it would soon go out so I kept driving towards home. It didn't go out so I stopped at a dealer on the way. They put a computer check on it and told me There was a miss in the engine. The car had 20 miles on it. They told to bring it in Monday morning since it was now almost 5:PM on Friday. Over the weekend I read the manual and it tells you about clicking the gas cap, and sure enough the both lights went out. I reamed out the poor salesman that I got the car from and he told me the guy who fills the tank when you take delivery was new and didn't know about clicking the gas cap. For sure I will never get a car from that dealer againarial
