changing knobs, too hard, help!!

i wanted to change the shift knob, so i tried to unscrew it, but i dunno if it's me, but the thing won't budge. I eventually gave up because I was afraid that by twisting too hard, it will damage the joints inside the gearbox.
does any1 know anything about this, whether or not this will damage the joints??

Did you unscrew the bottom ring first under the knob? After you do that it should be no problem for you.

The bottom ring part is on the wood knob, you just have to crank the leather one.
