Post Center console overheating??

I was just driving home from work this evening, and my center console was very HOT! I touched one of the screws along the side of the console between the seat and the console, and it burned my hand! My ride home took 40 minutes, and it's 50 degrees outside, sunroof open, windows a crack, and the heat on 75 and auto...I've driven harder and further and my console never got this hot! It was so hot, that with my elbow on the center armrest and hands on the shifter, I felt the heat on my forearm through my sweater! What gives?

the plastic right by the seatbelt, under the armrest, in that console area always heats up when I use my seat heaters... I figured it was a normal biproduct of the seat heaters. Never gave it much thought other than to flag in my mind, not to stick my hand down there when I've got the butt-warmer on

Oh yeah, my butt heater was on too, but I never experienced so much heat on the console from that!

There are two vent tubes that run thru the center console (right past the little storage box) that might heat up if you have the hot air running to the rear seat vents. Push your MODE button on your climate control and make sure you have the heat running to the floor vents. Those two screws are right next to the tubes, if not securing them! I didn't look that closely when I had it apart.

BTW Ed....if you have it on Auto then it might send heat to the rear vents. It's not the MODE button, but the other long, skinny button to the right of it that controls which vents the air goes thru...try it!

I had the heat on auto, but changed the mode for the upper vents, not for the legs...could be heat passing thru to the back, don't know if they are on when vents on top are only open...I'll see.. Thanks!

Dude, why care if it gets hot? yep, if air is going to the vents then it goes to the back vents. You can just shut the back ones off manually if you like to keep console cool, cause air goes thru it on the way to back vents. Just keep a burger in the console if ya like.

Anyone remember the BMW L6? It had a rear console that could be heated or cooled by the climate system. Pretty cool car, suede dash, lots of lux extras.

Don't forget our Exhaust is down the middle there too..are you lowered and spoilered and body kit'd in the front to reduce the cooling air that passes under ?? All heat shields intact ?? I've had the center console in many cars be warm.. and the "lump" in the back footwell also.

Yes Edward I had the same issue in my TL... my center console would get crazy hot... would even heat up CD's that I stored in there.

I attribute it to the rear heating ducts because the CL-S doesnt have the same issue... but the CL-S doesnt have rear heating ducts.

Maybe theres room to stuff some insulation between the heating hose and the console... someone should check it out.

Lol, my friend has a BMW 635CSi, that rear console rocks! You can hold three cans in there, and it cools down really quick.....What does this mean? That the passangers, not the driver, can enjoy 3 chilled cans of bee..errr soda, while they drive, and have a cold can every 15-20 minutes. It's really fun on long drives, until you have a plastic bag full of empty cans and three people with ready to burst bladders, and a driver who doesn't car because he hasen't been drinking......soda.

My first thought was the heat shield, but I wouldn't think that much heat would radiate that far up. I have noticed that the AC will chill the center console, but haven't really used the heat enough to notice if it has such a dramatic effect

DId you have your lights on when you were driving home? If so its because there is a blueish green light in the center counsel and that light stays on the whole time so it heats up everything. That was from my experience.

It's not like i felt the console to be hot just recently... I KNOW that the console gets warm when driving due to heat, lights, running gear(if necessary) and exhaust...but in the 19 months I owned the car, I never had the console feel this hot before..
