Cannot get rear brake drum back on.

I have a 1999 Acura TL. Replaced rear shoes for parking brake. The drum will not go back on over the shoes. Shoes are correct - compared them to old parts. Parking brake is not on. The left side drum went on and spins freely. The right side barely fits over the shoes and will not spin.

I made sure the shoes are compressed, bottomed out at top and bottom agains stops. The adjuster is all the way in.

I have been fighting this for 3 hours.... out of ideas. Please help.

Assuming all the misc. hardware springs, cable, pins and things are properly installed......try adjusting the interior parking brake foot pedal with it's aduster nut to the right of the pb pedal's arm top.

If you can post a picture I think is better, Also the service manual is your best friend in situations like this, Maybe something was put in wrong.

You need to back off the adjuster in the DRUM and also in the Parking Brake Pedal Nut < It is in the Pedal Itself.

I took photos. Here http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/ri...f49b8.jpg.html

The adjustment at the pedal is now loose, made sure adjuster in brake assembly is all the way in.

Note: The left rear brake is fine. New shoes installed and both rear drums, left and right, slide on the left side easily. Neither drum slides on the right side. I compared the two assemblies and do not see anything different. I am at a loss....

If ya swapped the sides, then one would come to the conclusion that something isn't properly aligned causing the shoes to bind. Were the old shoes that ya took off badly worn ? Take it apart again, clean everything up and try it without the adjuster in place. Maybe it's froze and isn't retracting, IDK. Looks pretty rusty in there. Make sure that the springs are on correctly.

You need to adjust the spur looking device (Brake shoe adjuster) and get it release pressure on it. If its in all the way then something is assembled wrong or the pads are the wrong ones.

Rust expands look at the drum if it has rust on the outer edge clean it off or sand it down.
Have you tried swapping disks from left to right, if the problem follows on the right side the problem is with the disk then check if theres rust.

I swapped the drum from right side to left side and it went on easily on the left side. I have taken the right side apart and reassembled 4 times.. drum still does not go on. I have really learned to dislike those springs.

I really thought I had it figured out. The pin that holds the shoe on has a bend in it which will push on the lever if installed the wrong way. This would push the brake pads out a little bit. See photos.

Unfortunately the pin orientation did not fix it. Drum still will not go on.

I am about to throw in the towel and reinstall old pads on one side. Brake material is worn down a lot on all pads and may allow drum to fit.

Go over to the "good" LHS, take pics and notes on orientation of various parts.
Ya may even wanna consider taking the good side apart to get a closer look at things to compare to the PITA side.
Are ya sure that the parking brake lever is aligned correctly and that the adjuster is bottomed out freely ?

The shoe adjuster is the only thing left or bad parts.

The brake shoe brand is Raybestos. I know I should slowly take apart the good side, taking photos. All this for a parking brake. I may just put the old shoes on and see if it works. That would tell me something. The hardest part are those dang crooked pins through the metal spring bracket and the long spring holding the shoes at the bottom below the adjuster. Man this really makes you appreciate disk brakes.

its possible crud is inside the adjuster assembly, making it appear retracted but not really
and not adjusting out when requested

get a `hardware kit` for the park brake shoes, = new pins and springs--not bent ,,,,

I checked the adjuster - took apart put back together. It is fine, all the way in. I measured the pad thickness, left side versus right side of car, both are the same.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I threw in the towel - put old shoes on and the brake drum slid on easily. The main thing is I have new disc brake pads all around.
