you dont have to at all, but you never know what could happen. there are crazy people out there. they can search your information through your license plate and can steal whatever appeals to them. especially on sites like these where people can maybe see your living habits and such (meaning when u work...etcetc.)

^ exactly .. just think of it as your ssn (social security number). yeah people will need it at times .. but we try to keep it confidential as possible. that's why we block out our license plates. hope that made sense.

there are plenty of people with thousands invested into their cars, not to mention blood, sweat, and tears. The last thing anybody wants is somebody finding their address through a plate number posted here and stealing their car.

I personally don't care because there's nothing really appealing about my car to steal.

Well they can get the same info driving down the street and getting your plate there, not much of a need to really hide it on the net.

sure if they are from the same area as you, (which most have under their join date under the avatar so you are still giving them an idea of where you are at)

Not that I'm a thief or planning to steal someone's car, I wanna know how can one find personal info with the licsence plate. Other than having access to local authority database, is there a way for someone with moderate IT skills to get these infos ?

True.

I pass hundreds of cars a day, thousands per year. They could easily get my plate and/or follow me home

Theives want all sorts of cars. The main reason most people blur the plates is because their cars are heavily modified. I know in Ontario, you can get personal info if you walk in with a plate number, $40, and a legitimate reason (i.e. small claims lawsuit, etc.). They might have safeguards against it that I'm not aware of, however. High-end thieves probably have computer geniuses that can or already have hacked the government database for plate numbers. Probably hard as hell to do, but nothing's impossible. Better safe than sorry. I don't bother because I just have a stock Accord, and its hard to see most of my pics anyways.

kris how can't you see the difference between a thief happening to see your car on the road in a very large city and goin to the acurazine.com photo gallery running ur plates and take a trip to your house? I see the latter being a bit easier on the thiefs part. I know anyone can steal your car at any time but why make it easier? Like dave said a few posts up it's better to be safe than sorry, that's my opinion

Oh i can see the difference. But most thieves are opportunistic. Sure im sure it happens, but i bet it happens far more that they see you, follow you home or where you are going and do the deed. Im not so anal about worrying about the little stuff like a license plate any more. More people see my car driving down the street FAR than someone searching the internet for it. Plus if they want it, come get it. If i dont catch them in the act they can have it. Its just makes it easier for me to get a new car.
