Can I just cut out my Bose sub and wire in an 800 watt aftermarket sub to the factory

Will doing this potentially ruin anything on the car?

I'm curious what people have done, but typically the Bose system runs at a lower ohm so it makes it hard to go aftermarket on anything while retaining the factory speakers. They don't sound good when you do get them working.

I've done it. Very difficult to tune it where it would sound good for a wide range of audio. my audio setup looking something like this:
  1. pure stock
  2. replaced everything: new headunit, 12" sub, 550W amp, replaced front and rear door speakers with rewiring from the new head unit to bypass the stock amp.
  3. removed 12" sub from trunk: that thing weighed a ton, took up all the trunk and my taste evolved.
  4. wired the new amp to the factory sub: again, difficult to tune.
  5. Replaced the head unit with one that had external amp to provide better power to door speakers (still, amp/sub combo not sounding too good)
  6. Rewired the sub output from the new head unit to the oem sub amp input (there is a DIY here somewhere if you are interested in this), and connected the oem sub amp back to the sub sounded much better.

I think that the open air enclosure of the oem sub really limits the response you will get, and it's also a shallow mount design, so you are even more limited on options there.

If you want harder, deeper bass, you're probably better off with a separate sub unit.

You can totally remove the stock sub, but no need to cut - just unbolt it.

The stock amplifier is pretty garbage though, and as Acura2g558 said it runs at some unusual electrical configs. So if you're going for aftermarket sound, go ahead and remove the rear seats and disconnect the stock sub amp. There was something about rewiring some parts of the system if you're still using the stock radio or something like that, but I can't recall it to be honest.

The factory amp in these cars is only for the sub and not the door speakers. So the speaker wires behind the factory radio go directly to the speaker in each door. That amp grabs its signal from the rear speakers in order to get subwoofer frequencies and creat bass. No they are not that good but there are plenty of aftermarket sub options that work like the factory sub (ie free air woofer) to sounds louder.
